Problem with windows update. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello I am having a problem with XP updates.  I have Windows XP service pack 2 and the system is activated. Everything has been fine up until recently when the system has just refused to do windows updates and now it is asking for validation, but the system is already validated? I dont know what the problem is, but would like someone to give me some advise on the matter..

  • Try the following:

    1. Reboot your computer into "Safe Mode".

    2. Go to Start > Run and type: %systemroot%\system32 then press the Enter key.

    3. Locate these two files: wpa.dbl and wpa.bak

    4. Rename the wpa.dbl file to wpaold.dbl and wpa.bak to wpaold.bak

    5. Reboot your computer into Normal mode.

This will force activation on the following boot. Sometimes if these files get corrupted, they can cause this type of problem.

If the above procedure does not solve the problem, then try:

  • Are you trying to validate and upgrade Office or Windows? Unfortunately, your copy of Office is not genuine.

I would recommend doing two things:

1 - head back to your retail point to remedy the issue with office

2 - with Windows, please ensure the file "wpa.dbl" is not marked as read-only and not marked as hidden in the c:\windows\system32 directory.

  • Problems with that.
    1. In answer to question, it is not possible as the company no longer exists plus I purchased the software in a different country to the one I am in now.
    2. Looked at that file and it is not marked as a read only file and it doesnt appear in the windows/system32 folder correctly either. It seems to have no association with it?
