Windows 7 Ultimate Retail not genuine? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've had my copy of Windows 7 since feb 04 of this year and it's suddenly gone not genuine? I don't understand. I've installed every update as an when it came on including the wga check that came out months ago and it's been fine. I've not made any changes to hardware other than adding an extra hard drive. I'm really worried as I can't afford to be without my computer as I'm currently out-of-work.

Please help me - I don't know what to do. I've phoned the activation line and it says I might be a victim of piracy - I'm going off my head here with worry.

  • The key that that was sold to you is a blocked MSDN key, please review the following sticky for more information. Sorry to tell you this. Windows will run in notification mode, MSE and other MS programs will not run. You will not lose access to your files but if you depend on MSE for virus protection then you will need to remedy the situation as quickly as possible.

  • Is there anything I can do to get my key either re-activated or another key issued?

  • Unfortunately that's a little outside my price range by about all of it. I'm un-employed at the moment due to redundancy - Is there anything else I can do? I bought the software in good faith and it has passed all MS Genuine Advantage checks & updates until today for some reason.

  • You can reformat your hard drive and then "clean install" your previous operating system.

  • Unfortunately it was a fresh build - There was no previous OS and I no longer have my old computer :(

  • Go to www.microsoft.com/genuine and attempt to validate. After the validation fails there will be an option to click on a link to reolve the issue. You should be presented with an opportunity to purchase a WGA kit at a reduced price. The license includes the normal support recieved with retail keys but is not transferable to another computer however the price is greatly reduced.

That is the cheapest option to get genuine.

  • Hello CA3D-Tweak,

The time zone in your mgadiag report tells us you are likely located in the UK.  If you purchased a packaged product and have genuine-looking physical materials, the information in this post may apply:  http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinewindows7/thread/4b6f01a4-4475-4e3b-a4e4-6ec921b785b8

However, if you only purchased a product key from the seller and downloaded the installation files from Microsoft or elsewhere, then unfortunately you would have nothing to send to MS for evaluation.
