Win 7 not genuine after file corruption

  Please first try recreating Licensing Store.

   

  Recreate the Licensing Store

  Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories

  Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt

  Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

   

  net stop sppsvc

  (wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

   

  CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

  REN tokens.dat tokens.bar

  net start sppsvc

  slui.exe

   

  After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.

  You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.

  If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

   

  Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report

  Running slui.exe gives me a dialog box with:

  Windows Activation

  An unauthorized change was made to Windows. You must reinstall or restore Windows system files to activate.

  I've run sfc /scannow which reported many errors and didn't cure the problem, even after a couple of runs.

  Please upload the CBS.log file to your SkyDrive, and post a link - with any luck we'll be able to correct the errors.

  Please also run a CheckSUR report...

  Please download and save  the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

  (you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

   

  Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.

  The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file  - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

   

  Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

   

  Then post another MGADiag report.

  I'm by no means certain that fixing all of these will fix the complate installation - but we can give it a try, and see :)

  Back Later with the first-fix protocol. - I think we'll try fixing the CheckSUR problems first, as they may impact also on the CBS results.

  I've uploaded a file - phbaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at  Noel's SkyDrive

  Please download and save it.

  Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…

  Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder  phbaa  in the same place.

  Open this folder - there should be two folders inside it (Manifests, and Packages)

   

  Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder

  C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

   

  And the content of the manifests folder (.manifest files) into this folder:

   

  C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

   

  Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

   

  Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

  That should fix many of the errors in the CheckSUR log - but I'm having problems sourcing the others (which I think are from .NET installs)

   I'll work on the SFC errors later and we'll see where we get to, then :)

  OK - second set of fixes :)

  I've uploaded a file - phpab.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
  Please download and save it.

  Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
  Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
  Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
  Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
  Pick that
  You'll have to log in with your username and password.

  Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
  At the prompt type
  DIR C:\phpab
  hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
  DIR D:\phpab
  or
  DIR E:\phpab

   

  The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

   

  XCOPY <drive>:\phpab  <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

   

  (e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

   

  run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
  EXIT
  and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

  Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
  then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your SkyDrive Public folder, and post a new link

  Also run a new MGADiag report, and post the result.

  Interesting that you had problems, even from the Repair Environment. Usually using that method, there are no problems.

  We may have to check a few things, in that case - but I'll need to digest the results first, and work out the probable cause, and how to correct it.

  Hi Noel,

  Just realised I forgot to mention before - I couldn't get into a "Repair Environment" using F8 - it did nothing despite several attempts. I ended up using msconfig to set Safe Mode manually and then rebooting into Safe Mode. Perhaps that didn't give the equivalent of the "Repair Environment"?

  That would explain the problem, then :)

  Safe Mode doesn't give you permissions to copy files to the Winsxs folder - unless we do some esoteric stuff in there.

  Dells are usually OK about displaying the Advanced Boot Menu (with Safe Mode and 'Repair My Computer', etc.) What happens when you attempt to access it?  (Compaqs c an be a pain)

  Do you have a set of Recovery disks?  If so, try booting using the System disk - this is usually a standard EOM disk with Dells, and you should be able to opt to Repair the system, which gets the same options list as the 'Repair My Computer' ones

  I'm still looking for the required missing files for the rest of the CheckSUR results. (I see a new one has cropped up, as well??)

  I finally managed to get all the manifest files except one.

  The last one appears to be from a Visual C++ 2005 install/update - I'll find it eventually :)

  I've uploaded a file - phbac.zip - to my SkyDrive at  Noel's SkyDrive

  Please download and save it.

  Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…

  Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder  phbac in the same place.

  Open this folder - there should be two folders inside it (Manifests, and Packages )

   

  Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder

  C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

   

  And the content of the manifests folder (.manifest files) into this folder:

   

  C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

   

  Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

   

  Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

  ...and now I'll have a look at your latest CBS.log file :)

  Now that we've got almost all the manifest files inplace, please run another SFC /SCANNOW and post the new CBS.log - it may show a few more problems up, and we can concentrate on those.

  I've finally found the missing manifest file - took me a while to work out which patch it was from, and the easiest way to extract it :)
  I'll wait to include it in the next set of fixes for the CBS log.

  I've also worked out why the Package files didn't 'take' - the ones you are missing are for an early incarnation of the patch which has been superseded. I don't think the system will miss them.

  I've uploaded a file - phbad.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
  Please download and save it.

  Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
  Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
  Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
  Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
  Pick that
  You'll have to log in with your username and password.

  Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
  At the prompt type
  DIR C:\phbad
  hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
  DIR D:\phbad
  or
  DIR E:\phbad

   

  The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

   

  XCOPY <drive>:\phbad  <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

   

  (e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

   

  run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
  EXIT
  and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

  Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
  then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your SkyDrive Public folder, and post a new link

  With luck, that will result in only one file remaining to be dealt with - the license.rtf file from SP1 (which you *really* don't need, since it's the one for Enterprise Edition!)

  SFC really doesn't like the MUI files! - they all failed, although all other files are now OK

  All I can think of is that the Backup files are also affected - but I'm not sure how to deal with those.

  Let's just see if the offer of CheckSUR is withdrawn now that there are no related errors
