Vista isn't functioning properly, claims it's no longer validated and fails to validate again. RRS feed

  • Question

  •

I bought a new computer from a retail store about 2 months ago and I had no problem validateing it when I first got it and all had been good up until about 2 days ago.

Now the operating system just isn't working properly, error messages constantly pop up saying it isn't validated and that I may be suspect to counterfieting, this error box gives me a link to validate it but the validation always fails, all methods of fixing the problem given don't work. In addition to that I can't run system restore, I can't update vista, and I can't even boot from CD anymore. When I try to run vista update nothing shows up period. No box or errors or anything. System restore just shows an error saying it was unable to preform the Restoration and to try again later. Also every time the computer starts up it brings up an error message saying the computer failed to start up properly and to try boot from CD to fix the error. Which I can't do because when I try to boot from CD it only shows a background image and after that nothing happens. The computer still loads however if I just press the "Load windows normally" option.

I assumed the problems may have been related to lack of validation preventing features from working, but I can't get validation to work. I've tried many solutions posted on these forums as well as the suggestions from the error link but every one came up with a variety of different errors. All the validation solutions related to using the command promt would bring up a variety of weird errors, some didn't seem to be excacly "normal".

I also thought it may have been a virus causing all these problems since none of it seems normal at all... But I tried doing a full computer scan using an up to date Kaspersky anti-virus 7.0 and it found nothing.

I'm confused what is happening and why none of these things are working... Outside of what I've mentioned the computer appears to be functioning perfectly. But I'm still worried that if I get a new problem I won't be able to fix it since I no longer have access to Updates, System restore, or booting from CD.

I ran the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool which I had seen asked in numerous other forum posts and here are my results if it helps any. All these file mismatches in my dianogstic report look bad >.<. Has something very bad gone wrong?

  • Hi Eregho,

In your Diagnostic Report, I see that every Critical System File is Mismatched (meaning modified). This is extremely unlikely. A more reasonable explanation is that the System Catalog has become corrupt. The System Catalog contains the signature hash for each Critical System File and is used to confirm that a file has not been modified. But since the System Catalog is (most likely corrupt) Vista is getting bad information that all of it's system files are not valid.

You can reinstall Vista. This is the fastest and simplest resolution to your issue. The drawback is that all infomation will me deleted from the computer. You would need to backup all importent documents, pictures, music and so on, to a removable storage device.

    Thank you,

  • Hi Darin,

Thanks for the response. I could probably reinstall vista, although I don't know how to go about doing it since when I try to boot from the vista DVD it brings up a blank screen and then nothing happens. But if reinstalling is the only solution I should be able to backup my files and do a complete format, I just don't know how to do one when I can't boot from DVD.

I could also try using the tool you spoke about, I do have a basic understanding of using the command prompt but it's fairly limited. I'm not sure if it's enough to use the tool you spoke of but I can try.

I'd like to give option 2 a try first however, I don't really want to format my computer unless it's completely nessacery.

Edit: It's probably worth noting that like E_Gravely I can't access the control panel either.

  • Hello all,

If you are having problems reinstalling Vista:

    1) If your Vista came pre-installed on your computer when you bought it and it was built by a large computer manufacturer (Dell, HP so on) then you can use the Windows Restore process provided by the manufacturer. Each manufacturer does the process different, so please see the documentation that came with the computer or contact the computer manufacturer for assistance

    2) If your Vista was installed after the computer was bought (or if you built the computer yourself) please go to http://support.microsoft.com and contact Vista Support. (Vista Support usually supports install issues at no cost)

  • Hi Darin,

My name is Eric and I'm having the exact same problems as Eregho.  I would like to re-install Vista as I've already backed up my pics and music but I can't access the control panel.  Its one of the functions I've lost.  Any ideas to help me out?  Thanks

  • Glad I'm not alone with this. I have the exact same problem and quite frankly am sick and tired of all the nonsense re security.......  A new coomputer, and i am going to spend literally hours to days making it work right and probably just to have the system crash again at a later date!!! I have a 2000 mod year car that has 150,000 miles & has never failed to start, run, and has never "crashed" what's with windows?

Ok, enough bitching, I'm about to start a fresh format & install the operating system all over again & load all my programs & data AGAIN. (Dear Microsoft, where do I send the bill for my time to do this?)

Oh yes, I'm running on a Toshiba p205-s6257 laptop that's about 4 months old an came with vista pre installed.

  • I'm having the same problem. My programs that go online are still working, but I can't just get online.

Can you send me the tool you mentioned?

Losing the info in my email program is going to really hurt my business.

Is there any way to back up Windows Mail without opening it?

I not very high-tech, but can follow directions well.

Please let me know what contact info you need.

    Thanks!

  • Exact problem, however mine is related to the Volume Shadow Copy Service not working.  As a result, while the OS in general is working okay (I too bought my comp with Vista HomePremium pre-loaded) IE does not launch, nor does system restore, and several other system tools.  The error log indicates that the ACTIVEDS.dll is missing, however I cannot find any info to help either reinstall the shadow copy service, or restore the .dll... any thoughts or help is very much appreciated
