can't restore music or software! Help! RRS feed

  • Question

  • Had a bad DATA hard drive but SYS/data system drive was ok.
I copied both drives and only had one or two bad files that that made backup files unusable.
    SO............
I did a reinstall of WHS on brand new hard drives.
    Updated, everything seemed ok.
NOW I wanted to copy back my music file/folders as well as my software files/folder
Had TWO drives that had the original partitioned sys/data with no file errors.
    I THEN
just pluged in one of the drives into WHS hardware but did not add to pool.
However EVERY file on this drive I could find in directory and properties
    BUT
    could not access ANY files
    read or copy
Made mistake of swaping dupe drive
    same!

took out drive and plugged into several XP computers
    EVERY file is not accessable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    WHAT did WHS do???????????????????
    Thanks,
    Ray

  • Your file, on disks from a server that had more than one, will be in a hidden folder: <drive>:\DE\Shares\etc. On the old system disk, you will only have files on the second partition.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

There's your problem.  You are copying from the wrong location.  As Ken said, you need to copy from <drive>:\DE\Shares.  The files in <drive>:\Shares are only tombstones, not real data.

Was able to read a few ini files but all the folders in share are not accessable.
    Wish I made a 3rd copy

  • NOW I am really confused.
    I did find a 3rd backup
I also found a copied folder to a winxp drive I copied some time ago.
that folder I can read/copy in winxp
the EXACT same folder on three drive that I am trying to read/copy
    NOW I can not access.
2 drives tried in new WHS
1 drive never touched since I copied folder many months ago.

winxp can't read whs files now?

will try and find old/not updated winxp and check again.

    WEIRD !!!!

  • Hi Ray,
Edit: Umm, was too early in the morning, so deleted the former text written here.
For informations, how you make the hidden folder DE visible (given they still exist on the disk or you included those into your "backup"), you can check this FAQ.

  • I can't say it too many times, there is no subdir "Shares" in DE on data partition on system drive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    ONLY off of root!!!!!

I am begining to hate WHS more and more.
The only drive that failed was the large 500gb data drive.
I was able to save all but 5 files using "folder copy & backup pro" by autobaup
I was able to copy all files on sys and data partition on system drive using the same program.
But now using exact same program or just copy, NO file where copied.

I have no clue why I could copy files in October 2008 but not now.

  • Hi Ray,
if you had no folder duplication enabled for the shared folders, it can be, that the DE folder did only exist on the failed data disk.
As said, the files in D:\shares are only tombstones. Think of them as pointers to the real files. As long as the real files are there, you are able to access them through the pointers (and this may have happened in October). Now they are gone, and the pointers point to a no longer existing location.

  • I had a defective 500gb data dist that would work on and off.
When computer was first turned on, drive was not working, after 10 minutes it worked for 30 minutes.
That was when I was able to transfer many of the backup files.
    Doing that sequence many times.
There was no problem with the system/data drive.
But I copied it as well.
During this time I was able to copy my install folder also to another drive.
But once I swapped out the backup drive with a clone of the original drive, it said there was
errors in in backup files. From then on I could not access any files.
WHS still runs but no shared file is able to be accessed.
Swapping out cloned drive killed everything.
Finally bad drive sent back for replacement.
Even though I was able to clone back to same type of drive, everything is lost it seams.
    Years worth of collecting music.
    My son's install folders.
    All lost.
Before WHS I had used ghost to backup everything.
I have a lot of clone drives.
But since WHS was released I have put too much faith in it.
Replaced both drives many times. Lost many files.
But I had backups until now.
I have two drives with many files. Or maybe nothing.
NEVER had so many hard drive failures.
    Just feel lost.

First, cloning drives in WHS is unsupported.

Were you using Folder Duplication on any of your shares before the drive failed?  Also, as Ken already asked, what is the exact error message you get when you try to open a file?  Have you tried removing each drive from the server, connecting each drive to a client PC, and check to see if any of them have a hidden folder called DE?
