Product key update failure: disk write error, 0x800402c9 RRS feed

  • Question

  • hi,

I recently bought my new computer which came with an official windows VISTA OS loaded - i had many problems vista and a friend of mine suggested he could fix this by formatting and installing XP - the disks he used were not genuine (which i wasnt happy about but i wanted my pc working asap). I decided to buy an official key from the microsoft validation site (costing £95 UK) and i get the following popup error constantly

Product key update failure: disk write error, 0x800402c9

I have searched some of the threads on here and i ran the diagnostic as suggested: results were:

    I have also tried:

    running chkdsk

Some threads advised rolling back to SP2 but im loath to try that as apparently the issue with sp3 has been fixed for this error??? (is this true?)

I would have FAR rathered just bought a genuine copy of XP professional from the shops but i decided to take advantage of the fact that this option would not require me to reformat and reinstall windows thereby keeping all my data intact and save time on getting my system back up to speed.

is there anything else i can try?

    thank you

Thank you for visiting the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program forum for Windows XP. Did you purchase this Product Key from Microsoft directly? If so, could please copy and paste the link from where you purchased on this thread.

You mentioned you did buy this from a Microsoft Validation site. I highly recommend that you contact support at that website you purchased this from for continued assistance. Two reasons, if it is a Microsoft site, you paid for the Product Key and are entitled to support and two, because this involves the fact you paid, there could be billing issues involved with this. I do not wish to make things more convoluted. When you reach them, tell them you posted a Microsoft Genuine Diagnostic Report and the Product Key results in our tool we use to analyze those results shows a status of "Keygen." They should be able to contact the Windows Genuine Advantage team if they have any questions.

This is the shortest route to victory.

Please to post back and let me know how it goes.

I apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to seeing your results. Thank you again for posting.

  • jgb123,

I have some new information for you.

First, you should have a copy of the Product Key sent to your email when you purchased it. Compare the last 15 digits of it to this I've pulled from your Diagnostic Report- Windows Product Key: *****-*****-XBWTV-8QKHB-2VXJP

If it is different, then make sure you have at least 2MB of free space on your hard drive and re-run this:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=50346

The above is the latest Product Key Update Tool.

Then let me know how it went.

I've been told that basically the new key did not swap out properly because the License type still says "Volume" on your Diagnostic Report. There are no Volume License Product Keys sold to customer at the link you provided.

Do try and let me know how this turns out.

  • thanks rick :)

here is the website i bought the key from - i got it after trying to validate - when it failed validation (as i thought it would) it led me to this page:

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/nonGenuine.aspx?displaylang=en&cCode=GBR&Error=8&sGuid=e7edbbb0-53d9-4a9f-b05b-2536131751ea&submit=1

i dont believe there to be billing issues - i was given the product key but when running the tool which is: keyupdatetool_enu(3).exe - it runs then midway through file checking it closes down with the error specified in my previous post and gives me no opportunity to enter the new key i was given.

i will try what you suggest all the same

  • jgb123,

I need you to do this and tell me if this was the problem- First, you should have a copy of the Product Key sent to your email when you purchased it. Compare the last 15 digits of it to this I've pulled from your Diagnostic Report- Windows Product Key: *****-*****-XBWTV-8QKHB-2VXJP

Post back here when you are finished. Do not post the full product key. Just let me know if they are the same or not.

  • jgb123,

When you talked to support did you tell them-

    * You had a keygen'd key
    * You purchased a new one through their Microsoft website
    * And there was a problem with the windows Product Key Update Tool in the swapping out of the old Product Key to the New One?

I'd suggest calling them back and asking them 1 question-

    * Can I do a clean installation and use this new Product Key I just bought?

If they say yes, then this will be what you need to do. Make sure you have the Media Disk that goes with your Product Key. If you don't have one, ask for one from Support since Windows Product Key Update Tool failed.

Then take into consideration all of the factors involved when restoring your comptuer.

You will need the physical software of all your programs.
    Passwords/links for websites.
    Drivers/Software for Hardware.
BACK UP ALL PERSONAL FILES Externally off the computer to some sort of removable media.
    Etc.

This information may or may not assist you in your resolution.

  • - Yes i checked the product key and it is indeed different

as i said earlier i have not actually had the opportunity to enter the new product key due to being limited by the keyupdatetool - even when trying the latest version of that tool.

    - to answer your latest post:

    * 1 - i described in my email to support about the keygen key and on the telephone

    * 2 - i described the exact way in which i purchased the new key including posting the website address

    * 3 - i described the exact nature of the problem with the updatetool and i was given instructions (on email and then telephone) on taking the validation route and then downloading the updatetool again, i followed their instructions implicitly and there was no resolution

    - neither support option seemed to know anything beyond this

when i purchased the key from genuine website it said i would receive a new disk - so i will wait for that and try a complete fresh install at that time.

Its a very annoying problem since i wanted to avoid reinstalling completely which was the whole point of using the windows product key update tool.

    thanks for your suggestions however

  • jgb123,

Not a problem. I hope your reinstall goes well. Be sure the Product Key/Media will work to do a reinstall before you do it.

Thank you for visiting the Windows Genuine Advantage program forum.
