    Hello axxent,

     ------------------Edit-------------------

My below post is not meant to take away from axxent's reported fix. I was just pointing out that not all Mod-Auths will be able to be fixed in this fashion.

Other then that, Thank You Axxent! for your time and trouble in posting this information. This should be of great help to others experiencing this specific issue.

    ------------------Edit-------------------

Thank you for the post, but unfortunately, the "An unauthorized change was made to windows" can be caused by one of two problems.

    1) A running program is incompatible with Vista (also known as an "In Memory" Mod-Auth):

To identify if you are having this type of Mod-Auth, your Diagnostic Report would have

    a) Line "TTS Error: M:2008xxxxxxxxx" ( xxxxxxxxx stands for the month, day and time the last Mod-Auth tamper event occured)

    b) Nothing would be listed under the line "File Scan Data-->"

This issue is resolved by identifing and removing the incompatible program.

    2) A critical system file has been modified or has become corrupt (also known as an "On Disk" Mod-Auth):

To identify this type of Mod-Auth, your Duagnostic Report would have:

    a) Line "TTS Error: M:2008xxxxxxxxx" (xxxxxxxxxx stand for the month, day and time the last Mod-Auth tamper event occured)

    b) One or more files listed as "Mismatched" under line "File Scan Data-->"

This issue is resolved by restoring, repairing or replacing the files listed as "Mismatched". How to do this depends on what file is listed as being Mismatched. If you get this issue, please create your own forum thread and post your Duagnostic Report and depending on the file(s) listed, I will provide the best steps to resolve the issue.

    Thank you,

    Darin Smith

  • Yes i know but my solution resolves the file mismatch thing, if u don't see file mismatch line in your diag report u just dont use this solution. And you beiing a wga manager and not posting the solution on how to do this doesn't seem fair to me and other users. As your windows support team worked with me over the phone , it seemed they never heard of this problem, so the whole team there worked on it and didn't come up with a solution . WEIRD HOW U GUYS HANDLE STUFF LIKE THIS, ME USING VISTA FOR 6 MONTHS AND U GUYS AS DEVELOPER/PROBLEMSOLVERS COULD NOT PROVIDE ME WITH A SOLUTION !

    Have a nice day!

BTW THAT WAS NOT MY REPORT I COPIED IT FROM SOMEONE ELSE ON THE FORUM, JUST TO MAKE THE TUTORIAL FOR THE FILE MISMATCH.

  • sorry - I am a dummy - how do you run file scan after it is saved as a text file?

  • ok - I really am a dummy - I figured out everything out - right up to how to paste it over the newer file.  where is the paste - do I just ctrl v while it is highlighted?

  • I started having this same problem several days ago that appeared to be happening after a Windows update. I tried restoring to an older point and the computer would work, but then get messed up again. I tried doing as stated above but the computer won't allow me to copy and paste the slc.dll file. I guess I haven't changed something right, but I don't know how. Here is my log thingy. I tried writng to WGA tech support, and I received an email saying I would receive a tech support email, but it never came. What's up with THAT?

  • Hello just4mybiz,

The core to your particular issue centers on the line in your Diagnostic Report, that reads:

    File Scan Data-->
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\slc.dll[6.0.6000.16509]

This line means that the critical system file slc.dll has either

    a)     Been tampered/modified/become corrupt to the point that its Signature Hash no longer matches the Signature Hash listed in Vista's System Catalog.

    Or

    b)     Been updated but the file's Signature Hash was not updated, in Vista's System Catalog to reflect the updated file's new Signature Hash.

Vista compares a Critical System file's Signature Hash with the Signature Hash listed in its System Catalog to determine if that Critical System file has been tampered with. When this happens, depending on the file that has been tampered, Vista may show as Genuine or Non-Genuine, but either way, Vista won't Validate correctly and may also exhibit other strange behavior.

To resolve your issue, we need to replace or repair the file so it's Signature Hash matches what is listed in Vista System Catalog. I can provide a couple of suggestions to do this:

    A)    Install Service Pack 1 for Vista (found at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b0c7136d-5ebb-413b-89c9-cb3d06d12674&DisplayLang=en). File slc.dll may be included in the SP1 install and if so, SP1 will overwrite the bad file with a Known-Good copy.

(Note: this is the simpler way to resolve, but be aware that I have not received confirmation that slc.dll.dll is, in fact, included in SP1. So if this option does not resolve the issue, please see option B).

    B)    Repair Windows using System Restore:

    1) Reboot Vista into Safe Mode

    2) Go to Control Panel

    3) On the left hand side of the Control Panel window, Click on "Classic View"

    4) Double-click "Backup and Restore Center"

    5) On the left hand side of the window, click "Repair Windows using system restore"

    6) Select "Choose Different Restore Point", Put a check in the box that says "Show restore points older than 5 days", select the restore point that corresponds to the date Before you first noticed the issue.

    7) Click the "Next" button.

    8) Reboot back into Normal mode

    9) Vista should no longer be in Reduced Functionality mode

If neither of these solutions resolves your issue, the last resort, that I can provide, is to reinstall Vista. But before you do that, create a (no cost) support request at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52029 and see if they can provide any alternatives.
