Burning CD

Question
-
HERE"S THE SCENARIO:
My CD is in, and indicated as "empty" in the Burn Page of Windows Media (XP) ...
The burn list says of each song "Ready to burn"
As I click upon "Start Burn", for a moment, there appears "Burn in progress" ... then it ceases, and reverts back to where it was before clicking on "Start Burn".
I've burned many a CD without any problems ... so what can be wrong???
I've tried putting in a new CD, even though the one that was in was new (and was indicated as empty with plenty of free space).
The computer I use for CD burning is not connected to the internet.
