Drives going to sleep - write behind and other things failing RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have noticed that my external drives go to sleep, and WHS writes to these drives fail, backup service stops working, etc. Server storage reports the drives as being "missing".

Restart the server, all the drives show up, all is well for a while.

Is there any way to tell WHS to keep these drives awake? Could it be the hardware in the drives themselves that are putting them to sleep?

    Thanks, --D

  • I would recommend against using external drives, for a variety of reasons. Failing that, find drives that don't spin down automatically. And yes, it probably is the drive firmware or interface electronics that's controlling this.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
