Processors RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was wondering how many are using dual processors to run WHS? Also what the minimum speed of the processors would have to be. I know that MS recommends a 1 ghz processor. Is it possible to say install on two 500 Mhz system? I am new to running servers.

  • I can try to load it on a slapped together dual p3 450 and see what happens.  I will have it running on either a dual 650, dual 800, dual 866 or dual 1ghz (all P3) by this weekend hopefully.

  • 2x 500 Mhz processors is not the same as 1x 1 Ghz processor. However, if WHS will install, you'll probably find that you get adequate performance for anything that isn't compute-heavy. File sharing certainly shouldn't be a challenge. Media streaming probably will be, and backups might be (though I think a lot of the computation there is off-loaded to the client PC being backed up).

  • I am running it, at present on a Pentium DUO processor.   2.8 Ghz per

It runs like a champ.   I need to get a new EIDE drive card for my IBM server so I can have it boot from a dvd.

    Good luck!

  • I have WHS happily running on dual 700MHz Pentium-3 chips, on an Intel 440BX chipset with 512Mb RAM.

  • I have it running on a VIA EIPA C3-800 with 512MB RAM.

A little slower than Server 2k3 on the same configuration but runs fine.
