Could I use mixed license metric for multiple SQL Server instances on same server?

I have a server which hosts several virtual machines running on it, and 3 SQL Server instances run on different VMs. I try to calculate compliance with licensing individual VM option. While the 3 instances has different version, one is 2012 standard and the other is 2008 R2 standard. And I have 2012 standard core licenses and some 2008 R2 standard server licenses. Could I license 2012 instance with 2012 core license and 2008 instances with 2008 server license?
