Legal copy of Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade and have installed this into my workstation.  This workstation crashed 2 months ago or so, and it is only now that I decided to build a new workstation.  I am installing my copy of this upgrade and activating it at the same time.  Windows keeps telling me that the PRODUCT KEY is invalid (incorrect) when in fact I have it in my hand.  What gives?

  • This is usually because you are attempting to install an Upgrade Key directly into its destination install, rather than as an upgrade.

If you used the Default Key to do the install (by not entering any Key in the process) then you need to do a repair install using the Upgrade Key, thereby properly installing the Key.

If you are still at the stage of doing the initial install, you should install the qualifying OS first, and then do the upgrade from there (probably using the Anytime Upgrade process)
