Saying Windows is not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased an upgrade from Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate in May 2010 from Amazon.

Today it says it might not be genuine and the desktop has gone black.

    Diagnostic report is as follows:

  • From your MGA Report:

    Windows Product ID: 00426-067-7866994-86303

Unfortunately, the Windows 7 Ultimate edition license installed was pirated from a "not-for-resale" MSDN Subscription license.  Contact the seller and demand a refund!  You can purchase a genuine Windows 7 Ultimate license from the Microsoft Store.  You'll need a "Full Version".

  • I suspect that your seller wasn't Amazon but an Amazon Marketplace seller. Big difference.

  • Yes, it was Amazon Marketplace.

I had no idea there was anything wrong with it. I'll certainly be claiming my money back.

It is outrageous that people do this. Does Amazon not have any responsibility?

  • Do I have to buy a new DVD of Windows 7 Ultimate and then use its product key for my existing system?

Or can I just get a license?

I don't want to have to reinstall Windows.

  • You don't have to reinstall Windows but you do have to buy Windows.  You cannot buy just a key and get a legitimate key.

Buy the same edition of Windows 7 and you can change the product key at the bottom of the System Properties page.  Right click on Computer and choose Properties.  Scroll to the bottom and use the blue link.

Be sure to report the piracy to

  • Thanks, Cbarnhorst. I'll do that.

That YouTube video was great. My DVD does have a stick-on label but it's not easy to spot. The Certificate of Authenticity doesn't have any holes by the hollogram but does say "Made in USA".

It's a very professional-looking fake. I would never have realised.

I'll buy a DVD from a reputable dealer and then use it's key as you suggested.

And, I'll certainly report the privacy. This has made me very angry indeed.

    Many thanks for your help.
