Why is the 'system' part of my setup taking up so much space?

Question
-
Here is how my resources read:
Total Size: 1.36 TB
Free Space: 1.17 TB
Shared folders: 25 GB
Duplication: 25 GB
PC Backups: 36 GB
System: 119 GB
Free Space: 1.2 TB
I use the addin: WHS BDBB among others, but I have only made one backup that it tells me about, at 31 GB I use a few other add-ins. Is there a common reason that the "system" would report using so much space? Or has something gone wrong with my setup. I have three equal-sized hard-drives, two that came with the device and one that I bought and installed of the same size.

The storage pool is the disk space allocated for use by Drive Extender... which in turn is the technology that allows a number of disks to appear as one giant storage area without the need for thinking about drive letters or running out of space on a single drive.
The WHS BDBB add-in uses what are called Application Folders to store backup database backups, and application folders (as they are generally non-visible to the user) are counted as part of the System disk usage.
In the console, take a look at the settings for WHS BDBB and see how many backups it has listed... given the system you describe for System and your PC Backups... I wouldn’t be surprised if you had 2 or 3 backups listed there, each of which is going to make the System part of the pie chart be that much bigger.

If you have data or programs installed outside of the storage pool, they will count in the"system" section. System is really "everything else".
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)- Proposed as answer by Lara JonesModerator Thursday, February 26, 2009 7:04 PM

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)I don't know what a storage pool is, but I have about 24 gig in the user area, about 500 mb in the software area and about 3 gig in the music area. That's about it. Not 119 gb. I'm thinking this must somehow be related to the WHS BDBB installation, given the puplications of backups that are going on there.

Hi:In WHS BDBB I have only one backup listed. However, I have both tfypes of duplication checked, so maybe that is contributing to the size issues.Monday, March 2, 2009 7:38 AM
