  • Hello DanKA1964,

Since Microsoft has released Office 2010, and is no longer selling Office 2007, the Trials of Office 2007 already installed on PCs cannot be converted to perpetual licenses by buying a product key online directly from Microsoft.  But they can be activated as perpetually licensed products, you just have to buy the right thing to match your particular installation.

There were two types of Office Trials commonly installed on new computers, the 2007 Office System and Office Home and Student 2007 Trial.

If your Trial is an installation of the 2007 Office System, you had the option to start a Trial of three different Office products (one of which was Office H&S 2007).  At the end of the Trial, you would be required to purchase an Office Product Key Card Kit for the edition of Office that you wanted to activate as a perpetual license.  These installations are OEM licenses and can only be activated with a Product Key Card Kit.  The Product Key Car Kit is notable because inside there are no discs, just a label with the product key.

If your Trial is an installation of Office Home and Student 2007, you can activate this installation as a perpetual license by going to a retail store and purchasing a retail full packaged product which includes installation discs, then using the product key inside the full packaged product to activate your existing installation of Office H&S 2007.

Your third option is to uninstall Office 2007, restart twice, then install a copy of the latest edition of Office, Office 2010.  You can go to the store and buy a copy of Office 2010, or you could even download and install a Trial of Office H&S 2010 directly from Microsoft if you wanted, anticipating that you will be purchasing the product directly from Microsoft online at the end of the Trial assuming you like the new Office.  Uninstalling Office does not affect your existing douments and data.  However, it's never a bad idea to backup anything you cannot afford to lose when making major changes to your computer, such as uninstalling and installing Office.
