where are files stored in WHS?? RRS feed

  • Question

  • WHS says;
        total size 2.73 TB
        free space is 1.98 TB, spread over 3 Internal (ATA) hdd's.  Status shows to be healthy.

    I have been using windows explorer to copy files to the "D" drive under 'shares'.  I now realize that is not the correct location.

    so, where or how do I move files from the "D" drive to ?? so that the 1.98tb of space is used instead of drive "D".

    Guess, I am old school, but I have always used windows explorer to move files.  Am I wrong in this?

  • so as I understand it from what you have said.  copying to \\servername\directory name from a client computer is different than copying w/ windows explorer on the server desktop.

    I didn't know that using windows explorer on the server desktop was not supported.  That's my old school thinking.

    So if I work from a client computer I should be able to move/copy files w/o a problem.  Correct?

    Thank you for your quick reply.  I will test it now.  Jim

  • Using Explorer is fine, but copying to C:\Shares\etc. can cause problems down the road. Instead you should copy to \\servername\etc. I'll also mention that, by design, you should never need to log in to the server desktop (doing so is technically unsupported), so you're intended to do all of your file copying from client computers.
    I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
