Backup Service Not Running - Repair causes console to close

Question
-
I recieved some critical error messages that there were some File conflicts and the Backup service is not running. I deleted the files and restarted the server several times but it did not fix the backup service. Now when I try running repair the repair progress bar comes up and then almost immediately the console closes. How can I reset the backups without running the repair tool. Saving the backups would be nice but not necessary.

Well, in extremis you can always delete the backup database entirely by logging in to your server directly, and deleting the contents of the folder D:\Folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4} (but not the folder itself!).
But if you have had file conflicts reported, you should review this FAQ , which details some of the possible causes. And you should probably run chkdsk on all your drives .

An update - I opend the toolkit on the server and tried to reset the backups using this tool. When I selected the reset button I immediately got this message -
Faild to Reset Database: System.InvalidOperationException: Cannot stot WHSBackup serviceon computer ".".--->
System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The service has not been started.
---End of inner exception stacj trace ---
at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController.Stop()
at Micorosft.HomeServer.HomerServerConsoleTab.Toolkit.CompanionControl.resetD88tn_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e)
Does this make sense to anyone?

Running chkdsk didn't fix it but deleting all of the backup files did!
