  • Question

  • My laptop is the hub for Onecare circle, I have an external harddrive hook up to my desktop which is shared. My printer is also shared from this desktop pc. It has always been this way every since I've had Windows Onecare. As of today I can't access that drive or print anything. I get a Network Error: Windows cannot acess \\ xxxxx\x Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to idenify and resolve network problims, click diagnose. the diagnose says to check the spelling which is ok or that there is nothing wrong. can soneone help me out with this.

  • I've moved your post to the Firewall topic folder.

This is apparently a bug in OneCare's firewall. I get it every once in a while. The solution for me is to disable the OneCare firewall and re-enable it again, which restores the sharing - assuming that it worked before with Onecare installed as you describe.

I don't know why it happens, but something messes up the network stack on occasion and a firewall off/on seems to resolve it.

It may also be worth checking to make sure that only one network adapter is active on the PC hosting the shared resources as multiple active adapters will cause OneCare to lock down the network into Public mode on all connections.

    Open OneCare.

    Click Change Settings

On the firewall tab, click configure firewall

If the network is shown as Public, click Change Location to change it to "Home or Work."

    Click the Advanced Settings button

    Click Network connections tab.

If there are multiple active connections shown, you may need to disable the extras in your Windows network connections settings. (Network and Sharing Center, manage connections, in Vista; Right click My Network Places and select Properties on the Start menu in XP)

On the Ports and Protocols tab, add a check mark next to File and Printer Sharing - for subnet and Internet if the first setting alone (after all of the above are verified) does not allow Sharing to work.

If all of the above fail, please contact support.
