  •

I bought a genuine full version of xp pro with the product key, which i have installed and activated on my desktop computer that i had built, however I would like to use the same cd to remove Vista from my new sony laptop. Does anyone know if i can just use the same cd and product key or will i have to buy another cd complete with key, or do i just need to buy another product key.  If i just need another key how do i get one.

  • Yes, you'll have to purchase a new "full version" Windows XP license and CD for installation on your Sony laptop.  Bear in mind that removing the factory installed operating system form your new Sony laptop will likely void its warranty.

  • Assuming you currently have a retail, and not an OEM license, see the following: http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/editorial/22/promotions/wal/

  • I-Pod,

Vista Business and Vista Ultimate are the only two Vista licenses that confer downgrade rights to a previous Windows OS.  So, if your Sony came with Vista Biz or Vista Ult, you may use the XP Pro CD and Product Key you have to install XP Pro, then activate using the Telephone Activation method.

If the Sony did NOT come with Vista Biz or Vista Ult, you have to purchase another Windows XP license.  Your most economical choice would be Windows XP Home OEM or Windows XP Pro OEM, purchased from a trusted local or online retailer.

BAsically you may follow certain steps to activate the operating system through the telephone. The steps will provide you with a phone number closest to you location.
