Windows Live Care RRS feed

  • Question

  • About a week ago, my computer slowed to a crawl. After checking resource usage, I found that windows live care anti virus was taking 70% of my cpu capacity. I turned it off and cpu is down from 90%+ to about 28%. What is going on?

PS: The specific offensive program was MsMpEng.exe, which I guess is a long time unresolved problem. I am running Vista.

  • I've moved your post to the anti-spyware topic folder, since msmpeng is the engine for OneCare's virus and spyware protection (and also the same for Defender and Forefront).

The most likely cause of this problem is a conflict with other security software on the PC that is active or a program or service that is causing the engine to go into a "lock" condition trying to read a file or memory that is being updated in an unusual way.

Please contact support for help with this problem.
