File History to Remote Seagate drive

  Help please.  I was setting up a new Seagate external backup for some home laptops running Windows 8.1 and ran into a snag.  When setting up the File History back, it will not write to the external drive unless I format the drive in exFAT, then it works fine.  When I try to then make a System Image Backup it comes back and tells me it cannot unless I format the disk as NTFS.  For our purposes, I would like to be able to do both, but cannot seem to make it work.  I realize I might be able to segment the drive and have multiple formats, but was trying to avoid that if possible.
