Closed forum suddenly acquires a single Off-topic thread RRS feed

  • Question

  • In the list of SharePoint forums there is one oddity. There's a "Project Server" forum here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/projectserver/threads which has always contained a single post from the Project Server team saying that Project Server questions go to the Project Server *newsgroups*.

After the Project Server team made that post they closed the forum.

Now, suddenly, there is a second thread in that forum (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/projectserver/thread/8d9cdf42-d2c4-4514-9f40-23682004822c) which (the thread) was started in March 2007 with a couple of posts from 2009.

That post **which has nothing to do with Project Server** was moved there by an MVP who wrote that it was in the wrong forum (and that it was a WSS 3.0 question)

MovedJohn SaundersMVP12 hours 13 minutes agoIt's a WSS question, not a general .ASMX question (From:ASMX Web Services and XML Serialization)

    So the questions.

    1. Why was it possible to move a thread into a closed forum ?

    2. As the mover wrote that this was a WSS 3.0 question did he actually specify for it to go to another forum.

    Also

    3. Can I have Moderator rights in that forum (the only in that entire list where I don't have Moderator rights) so I can move it or will one of the forum people move it please.

    ----------------------------------

A re-check shows that the forum is no longer being listed as closed but as "Only Moderators or Answerers may post to this forum"

This is a disaster if it leads to Moderators being able to move way off-topic posts to it with no way for them to be moved on.

Oddly even as a Moderator I do not see this forum on the list of alternatives when I use Ask a Question and get the dropdown with the list of subject areas and then the list of forums. So I *can't* as a Moderator Add a question to this forum; but Moving to it is apparently OK (at least for John Saunders !).

Please remove this offending post and return the Forum to closed status. This present halfway house is clearly a disaster.

  • I remember posting this and remember the issue. You will have noticed it was posted over 3 years ago ...

There was a URL to that forum in the original post's line one. If you go there now it just says "You are not authorized to perform this action."

This was all prior to there being any forums *at all* for Project Server but only newsgroups. This particular forum was within the pre-SharePoint 2010 set and  just had a message saying to post Project Server questions to the Project Server newsgroup and the forum was then locked.

Later with the arrival of real Project Server forums this was presumably (and presumably months afterwards) removed.

  • I know that a thread can be moved to Partners forum or to Moderator's only forum, so the problem does exist. I think only "normal" forums should be visible for move operation otherwise a mistake can happen.

  • Can anyone else move a thread into a closed forum?

Got a link to this forum in question? Was this an old (retired) newsgroup issue?

    Still an issue?

    Thanks!
