Microsoft Money Standard (ex Vista/XP) for use on new Windows 10 computer. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I would very much appreciate assistance with activating my Microsoft Money Standard data previously used on my fast failing Vista/XP computer but now required for use on my new Windows 10 computer.  Please would it be possible to have a step by step guide on how best to proceed.

As Cal noted, 14.0.120.805 is actually Money 2005 even though the disk is copyright 2004.  And a disk would actually do you no good because the disk version of Money 2005 needed an update from a Microsoft server that is no longer available.

Fortunately, the updated version of Money 2005 International English is available free from:

    https://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/479281b2-90f9-42ca-85f7-644fc6e1e5c3/download-microsoft-money-installation-files-solve-activation-and-some-other-errors?forum=money

Download the installation file to your Windows 10 computer and double-click on it to install Money.  Then copy your Money.mny file from your old computer to the Documents folder of your Windows 10 computer.  When you double-click on the copied Money.mny file, Money will open it and you are all set.

Post back and let us know how you make out or if you need more help.

  • The process depends on what version of Money you have been using on your Vista/XP computer.  Open Money on your XP/Vista computer and select Help>About Microsoft Money.  Post back with the version.  Also let us know if you still have the original Money installation disk and what version of Money is on that disk.

The process may be as simple as:

      - Use your disk to install Money on your Windows 10 computer

      - Copy your Money.mny file from your old computer to the Documents folder on your Windows 10 computer

      - Double-click on the copied Money.mny file to open it

    but there can be complications.

  • Maz 39, if you are seeing a message about activating, see the second post in this forum to download a version that will not need activating. I presume you are in North America, and would get Sunset. Use the method Bill Becker described.

If using Sunset, also  put in the patch described in what is currently the first post in this forum.

If you are not getting an activation message, then your original media may work.

  • Hi Bill,

Many thanks for your prompt response.

Money help advised" Microsoft Money Deluxe" Version 14.0.120.805 Copyright 2004.

No problems locating the original Microsoft Money packaging - however the disk was not within, as expected - and despite a fairly thorough initial search has yet to be located.

I note  a boxed Serial Number also appears on the about Microsoft Money page, and wonder if this would be useful.

  • Original disk and serial number have no use. Use the downloads via what is currently the second post in this forum.

  • Hi Cal,

Thank you for your prompt response, and offer of support.

No  I have not received any activation messages.

I am afraid its a fail in geography, although North America sounds very appealing - I am in Australia, and yes I think Sunset is available.

  • If you want to be able to open a file created by Money 2005 file from Australia, you will need the Money 2005 International English QFE2 version. See the link in the second post in this forum.

  • Hi Bill,

    Thanks again for your help.

On getting an unsecure site warning at the final hurdle I took fright and handed the project over to my Everyday Support Team - who did succeed in producing a new money folder ready for use.  However all efforts to have the old data materialise (via a USB stick) have to date been a miserable failure.

Any further thoughts would be much appreciate.

  • If you have always been in Australia, Money 2005 International is the correct version.

Copy your .mny data file to a location in your <user name>/Documents folder (not the Money default C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money 2005\ folder) and Money should open it.

Were you in Australia when you first installed Money 2005? If not, you may have a different regional version of Money: if so, you will need an updated version of that region's Money 2005 - either Money 2005 UK QFE2 or Sunset.

  • Hi Dominic,

Many thanks for your efforts to assist.

I have a feeling that Money 2005 UK QFE2 or Sunset may well have been installed instead of your recommended Money 2005 International.  Which may explain the ongoing lack of progress.    The first installation of Money was completed in Australia and has not been altered apart from earlier updates when available.

I seem to be exhausting my options in trying to get this sorted,  along with coming to terms with Windows 10 its proving quite a challenge, even with professional support its been very time consuming, which keeps forcing me to return to Vista in frustration, just to get the job done.

Any suggestions on how best to proceed would be appreciated, out-dated or not I have found Microsoft Money extremely useful, and if at all possible I would like to retrieve my records and continue to use it.

    Thank you for your interest.

  • There is no way to tell which regional version of Money you have on your old machine. Repair your data file on the Vista machine before transferring it in case a damaged data file is the real problem: start Money with your data file and then go to File - Repair Money file.

The only way to check is to uninstall Money 2005 International on your new system and try Money 2005 UK QFE2 and then Sunset to see if it will open your .mny data file. If Sunset is the one you need note the update in the first post in this forum.

Microsoft Money is unsupported and will eventually stop working when either Internet Explorer is removed from Windows (Money uses the IE rendering engine) or some Windows feature used by Money to speed its function is modified in ways Money cannot cope with.

    Thursday, April 26, 2018 12:57 PM
  • You can determine which regional version of Money 2005 or later  by running this command in a command window:
    dir \mny*.aw /s

The command may take a while, depending on disk size and speed.  It will find one or more files in MNYCoreFiles\Works\

If the installation is UK, the file will be MNYUKEN.aw.  If it is
INTL English, it will have several files all starting with MNYEN.
The file for US would be MNYUSEN.aw.  So, to summarize, the 4th and
5th letters tell the story, UK, EN or US. Later US versions also should
    work for Canada.

  • Hi Dominic,

Thank you for the follow up.

I did attempt to repair Money file, but on completion there did not appear to be any result as in - problems found/solved.  I should advise that Vista's performance is now per kind favor of a Video Card, and I am aware of some loss of function as a result - each day that it works is a bonus.

I now have a new as yet unused "Money Plus" installed on my new computer, and considering your comments re the uncertainty of Money's future, I wonder if I should cut my losses, make a fresh start and forget about trying to move my old data, and use this Money Plus - fully aware of your dire forecast - for as long as it lasts.

I have had a quick look at "MM" alternatives, but so far none have had any appeal.

    I would appreciate your thoughts.

  • Money Plus is the US version and cannot import International version data files.
You can use the QIF export/import procedure to transfer your data - to other regional versions of Money and to any program which will accept QIF data.
How to export/import accounts (using QIF)

Note that you need to reopen any closed accounts to export information in them.

It is not yet known when IE will be removed from Windows.
I am parallel running GnuCash but it is very slow to load and save data files in Windows. However, GnuCash is being developed and supported.

  • Hi Dominic,

Thank you for your continued support in this ?unending saga.   Although disappointing, it is good to have Money Plus identified as the incorrect version for my needs.

Thank you also for the export/import accounts link (using QIF) however I wonder would it be preferable to start from scratch - Delete "Money Plus" on my new computer, and go back as far as necessary in collecting the data from my old computer onto the USB and proceeding with the correct 2005 Money International version??

I do not feel confident in my own ability to manage these data transfers, and would need to rely on my professional support team as previously to do this.

I had not heard of GnuCash  what good thinking to parallel run it with "MM" you will be well prepared for the inevitable.  Thank you for the recommendation I must investigate GnuCash further.

  • I assume you have followed Cal Learner's advice by running dir \mny*.aw /s in a command window and confirmed that you have Money 2005 International English on your Vista machine.

If so, Money 2005 International English QFE2 should be able to read your transferred .mny data file once you have uninstalled Sunset and installed Money 2005 International English QFE2. If not, the QIF procedure will transfer most data - there will be some losses, particularly things like investment price history. It is tedious and time consuming but works.

If you choose to change to or parallel run some other program, such as GnuCash, exported QIF files can be imported to that program. There will be some anomalies after import and these will need to be resolved manually.

On reading the Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity label on the top flap of the Microsoft Money Standard box amongst other data it states -

MONEY 2005 WIN32 ENGLISH INTL NOT TO UK CD

is this what we need to know?

Yes. This confirms that you want to install  Money 2005 International English QFE2 via the link if you want to use an existing *.mny or *.mbf file.

After install, and opening a copy of your old file (that you copied to your Documents folder), you must set up the backup paths to point to places that exist on the new computer. To do that more easily, browse to the new location in the Documents folder. Tools->Settings->BackupOptions
