People using LiveID (Passport) in Microsoft Money should turn that off RRS feed

  • Question

  • People using LiveID (Passport) in Microsoft Money should turn that off. Servers are going away at the end of January, and you should avoid the rush. If you have trouble doing that, post back with what version of Money. With older versions (2002 thru 2004), I think it is already too late, unless you update to a newer version, including Money Plus Sunset. Those people using Ultrasoft Money to sync with Microsoft Money should check with Ultrasoft. Note the posting regarding Ultrasoft later in this thread.

Edit Feb: Log into Money offline. You may have to do this to acomplish that:

Disconnect from the Internet. If using Money Plus, change the date on your computer to a date in January, such as 2011 Jan 15. Start Money, and log in offline. Remove your LiveID. Do not attempt to change your LiveID.

To remove the Live ID, go to File-PasswordManager, and choose to remove your LiveID.  To remove or add a conventional password, also see File->PasswordManager.

If you get a warning that you cannot remove the LiveID, turn off Tools->Settings->ReceiveAccountUpdatesFromMsnMoneyMyAccounts if you set that, even if you leave on Live ID to work with Ultrasoft Money.

  • Thanks for the information, help, and patience I found a password in my notes that I used 10 years ago the access msn.com  so I typed it in and the files opened.  Why it used that password from that long ago is a wonder.  It may have been a password from the older verision Money that I used when I first started using the program.

  • Thanks, Cal.

Stupid question seeing as how we will lose quotes in a couple of months anyway, but by removing LiveID, will we be disabling the quotes function now?

  • Quotes work fine without Live ID.

  • I followed your advice, but am now getting a lot of problems with Ultrasoft Money synchronisation my mobile phone. Ultrasoft Money does not seem to want to accept synching with a Money file without Live ID.

Probably outside the scope of this forum.

  • I followed your advice, but am now getting a lot of problems with Ultrasoft Money synchronisation my mobile phone. Ultrasoft Money does not seem to want to accept synching with a Money file without Live ID.

I am glad you brought this up. That could be important to some users. Ultrasoft Money has had a tight coupling to Money, and if they say their users should keep the LiveID in place, I would believe that.

It may be sufficient that users of Microsoft Money Plus and Money 2007 disable Tools->Settings->ReceiveAccountUpdatesFromMSNMoneyMyAccounts. (at least that is the path that I see in Microsoft Money Plus without the MSN updates enabled.) The purpose is to not have Money trying to reach the MSN Money servers. I note that that setting does not show up in Money Plus Sunset. On Sunset, Tools->Settings->AccountSettings(Global) is the first item in the list rather than the second.

I suggest inquiring at ultrasoft.com, and maybe post back what you find out.

You will be able to do what you could do now-- or a week ago. The service in which banks that were accessed via MSN Money getting info from Yodlee has gone away. http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/money/thread/30f986a2-eb1a-4817-a4e7-afeeba222de8 So you will not lose access from what you had a week or so ago.

You will lose the password-aspect to your file. You could put a conventional password on within Money. On my laptop, I put my Money data files (*.mny and *.mbf) into a TrueCrypt container which makes a virtual disk.

Whether you can now or in the future download from your bank (or play the piano) will not be affected by removing your LiveID.

Will Money Plus Sunset allow loading of MS Money 2000 .mny files? I'm stuck on a reinstall where my .mny files won't load because it's been updated since the original install. Seems you've answered why my MS Money 2000 won't update now.

  • So you started your Money file on M2K, upgraded to some version unknown of Money along the way and just had to reinstall everything but can't find Money newer than M2K?

Your best bet is to try upgrade it with M+S. That may not work--either because the version unknown is too old for M+S to upgrade or because it needs to get past the WinLive authentication and cannot now that the servers are gone.

If the former case, you will have to attempt going through an intermediate version to get to M+S. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919524/en-us and/or http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913108/en-us. I would get on this quickly--these intermediate upgrade paths may disappear any doy now if they haven't already.

Good luck. I think you are in pretty deep.

  • Hi,

When trying to import my Microsoft Money 2007 files to Quicken it asks for my Windows Live ID password.  No matter what password I use it keeps saying Password Incorrect.  When I try to remove Windows Live ID  under password manager, it says Not Removed, Try Again.  If I open a new file, it will allow me to open it without a password.  But I can't get rid of Windows Live ID password in the file I need to import to Quicken.  I was told to download Money Plus Sunset and I did that.  Still same problem.  Someone from Microsoft Money support e-mailed me to try to Repair File, that did not work.  He said if that didn't work to try to load an older backup file, then click restore.  Needed to get my backup through Dell and got on with a Dell Technician who tried to solve the problem to no avail after 3 1/2 hours on phone.  Still have the same problem.  All I want to do is remove the Windows Live ID password when signing into Money.  I can do that if I open a new file.  I have years of data in this file.  Would there be some way to transfer this file to the new file without the password?  Please can someone help me.  My last resort will be to just open a new Quicken file, enter all my accounts and last balances; enter all my stocks; and start from scratch.  Thanks in advance for any help.

Disconnect from the Internet. Open Money Plus or Money 2007, signing in to your Money file offline. Remove the LiveID. Close Money. Reconnect to the Internet.

Test that the removal was successful.

Convert to Quicken and/or use PocketSense scripts to assist continued use of Microsoft Money.

You already tried "all that". What happened when you disconnected from the Internet? Were you successful at getting into your file?

There may be no hope for you. Even if there is a solution for you, I can't tell you how to handle all of the permutations.

Do you remember having a Live ID on your file?

There are three questions in this post.

sanitize.exe is way too strong of a tool for this. sanitize.exe will remove all of your payee info and other info that might  be considered personal.

You had the same problem as who? What program are you running?

  • Hi all - I'm in a similar situation.

I'm running Money Plus Deluxe (Version 17)

Last Friday, my computer blue screened when Money was open and I haven't been able to get back into my file or any of the backups since then.

It prompts me to enter my WLID and I am told incorrect password.  I try this both connected to the internet and disconnected.

I have years of information in this file and I can't access the file or several back-ups I have.

    any ideas???

Did you have a WLID on your file? If so, do you clearly remember your credentials? Do not attempt to change your credentials. If you attempted to change your LiveID, you will need the credentials in effect at the time the file was saved. Disconnect from the Internet, and then open Money.

I would consider reinstalling Money 2007. Also, make sure you keep a copy of Sunset in case you have a problem with reinstall in the future.

You could also try installing Sunset onto a different computer and see if that can access your files.

Hi Cal - I have a WLID on my file (as it is prompting me to enter it!) and I definitely know the credntials.  I use it all the time.

I will try to reinstall on a different computer.  What is really odd is the fact I can't even restore a back-up from a week ago as it tells me that my password is wrong.  I tried to create a new file from scratch and associate a WLID with it and it gave me an error message as well.  I think maybe the WLID server is down?

If you want to create a new file with no LiveID,

    1. Start Money 2006 (and probably later) and click File, click New... or click File, click New
    and then click New File....
    2. Click Next, choose Decline and click Yes when you receive a warning.
    3. Check the "I don't want to use a password for my Money file" option and
    click Next.
    4. Click the "Skip Account Setup" link and click Finish.

That new file will not have your existing data in it.

For an existing file that has a LiveID on it, disconnect from the Internet. Try to open your file. Choose to sign in offline. Once into your file, remove the LiveID. File->PasswordManager....

If you are unsuccessful, you can try repairing your *.mny file with salv.exe (level 2). You can also try restoring your newest or second-newest *.mbf file. I would decline to restore to the DefaultLocation, but rather I would Browse to your Documents folder and choose a new name

    Don'ts:

Don't change your LiveID.  If you already did, use the one in
effect when you saved the file to get in.

    Don't delete your LiveID.

Disconnect from the Internet-- unplug the ethernet or whatever it takes.

Start Money. Try logging into your latest file offline. Try each credential (from before and after your change) if you are not sure which would work.

If that does not succeed, File->Restore your newest or second-newest backup. Rather than restore to the "default location", Browse to your Documents folder, and choose a new name.

It would not be a good idea to create a new file with a WLID. If it were possible to do so, it would not be helpful.

  • Based on what I infer, no. I had hoped that the people who took this up with Microsoft Money Support would be given a solution. Nobody since the issue came up has reported success removing the WLID without the credentials in effect when the file was saved. It seems unfair to me too.

I have tried turning off Internet....don't get the option to log-in without ID.

10+ years of Microsoft Money files are locked up....ironic thing for me is that I NEVER used the bill paying and did not need to have Live ID but never knew I could turn off.

Do not attempt to change your LiveID. If you know your credentials in use when you saved your file, yes, I can probably help. "Why" would not help. I would be speculating.

What sofware are you using-- Money 2006 Deluxe US version, or what?

Sanitize.exe would not help to access your data. It is something else entirely.

No. With most banks, you would have to go to the web site of the bank and download an OFX or QFX file. For most credit cards, brokers, and some banks, you can do the statement download with the PocketSense scripts.

If you were automatically downloading from your bank in January, then the PocketSense scripts would likely work with Pocketsense. Care to name your bank?.

Do download and save the Sunset install file in case you need it later.

Thanks Cal. I found the pocketsense articles, and some of your posts. I'll give those a go. I did try the setting the clock back a few days workaround and (at least for now) I was able to get the downloads for the last couple days. Sounds like that method won't work forever, and I need to get Python, the scripts and follow the instructions. *sigh* It's a little more work than I was hoping for (I thought once I disconnected my LiveID I was free and clear), but at least it works...thanks to many hours of effort by others.

Thank you!! I'll let you know how it goes... :-)

Some financial institutions have stopped allowing online synching, and you need to workaround and do downloads, etc. However, my main financial institution (my bank), has not discontinued online services and I should be able to, but I get the same "Update not complete" message for all my financial institutions! I contacted MS support for this, and they referred me back to this forum! Please help :) [and where would I get all these files you refer to, such as Sunset, or Pocketsense? and which do I need?]

LiveID on your file is not going to help. It may hurt badly.

Regarding your other questions, the Search Forums box near the top of the forum is a good place to enter "pocketsense". http://www.microsoft.com/money/sunset.mspx is a good way to read about and get Sunset.

I am going to cut down your big font. At least you know the word "similar". You don't hear that word often enough.

If you remember the credentials in effect when you were last in that Money file, yes.

Disconnect from the Internet. If using Money Plus, change the date on your computer to a date in January, such as 2011 Jan 15. Start Money, and log in offline with the credentials in effect when you were last in that Money file. Remove your LiveID. Do not attempt to change your LiveID.

To remove the Live ID, go to File-PasswordManager, and choose to remove your LiveID.

If you do not remember the credentials in effect when you were last in that Money file, no. Try hard to remember. Look thru the papers or files where you recorded such things to see if you made a note that you can find. Write down what you think can remember, and maybe that list will help you later when you try the various permutations.

You already changed your LiveID, which complicates this a bit. (I understand that you were just following the info provided to you.)  The credentials that you now use to access Hotmail are your post-change credentials. What you want to use to get into Money is your pre-change credentials. Take a moment to write down what you remember of the pre-change credentials.

  • HI Cal,

I totally forget my Microsoft Money Password because it was on "Remember Password" since 2 years ago and now when i switch the software to Money Plus sunset, it asking me to put the password.

As usual, i can reset the password using the normal process of "Forget your Password?" but now i does the same process and this alert appear " The email address or password is incorect. Please try again"

It is a critical issue for me and i didn't find any solution till now.

Please advise on how to reset the password.

  • What happens if we do not turn of the LiveID?

It may cause some inconvience at some point, but probably not a big deal because Money 2005 and later have the ability to remove the Live ID without the server being available. I don't know if any real problem will develop if you leave it on.  Still, it offers no additional service to you to keep it. You can use a conventional password on the file to keep the curious out.

  • I have tried to reset the computer back to an earlier date.  Used the credentials that I had before I changed them.  Reset the credentials back to the orginal on the net.  When the sign information come up I get e-mail addres of @msn. I receive a check the server status which takes me to the website on the net.  If I change the e-mail address to @hotmail.com I get your sign in information cannot be verified go on line and then reenter your sign in information.  I have tried using a back up file with the same result.  I have tried the sunset verision the money plus verision.  I can open the file to remove the live.  I was using 2007 Money Deluxe when I down loaded the sunset program.  After I down Loaded the sunset verision I start having the problem opening my files.

I can not open the file to remove the live Id.  I just reread the message above.

  • The suggestion was to set the computer clock to the earlier time. That is done by an adminstrator right-clicking the time at the lower-right of the screen and choosing AdjustDate/Time. I don't know if that would help, but it appears to have helped somebody.

To remove your LiveID, disconnect from the Internet. If using Money Plus, change the date on your computer to a date in January, such as 2011 Jan 15. Start Money, and log in offline. Remove your LiveID. Do not attempt to change your LiveID.

You need to use the same credentials in effect when you saved the file. Look for where you might have written down your credentials. Write down what you remember about the credentials. Then think about if there could be an error in what you wrote down. Try any alternatives that might have been in effect. For example, you appear to not have been sure whether the email address part of the credentials was @msn.com or @hotmail.com. Consider all parts.

  • The reason I use the e-mail@msn.com is because that is what comes up when I try to open the data base.  However in the past is would not always open so I had to change it to e-mail@hotmail to get the data base to open.  I used the same password for both.  I just tried what you suggested above.  I can do that with the sample e-mail address but it still won't let me into my data base that I need to open.  I have tried using both e-mail addresses above plus I have tried to use the pass word that I change to when I first started trying to get into my data base a month ago before I knew I was not suppose to try to change.  I know I am using the correct pass word and e-mail address because I have them written down and I am still using the e-mail address and password for my hotmail account.  Something change when I down loaded the sunset version of the money because the next time I tried to open the file I could not get in.  Do you have anymore suggestions?

  • I don't know about " e-mail@msn.com" or " e-mail@hotmail". I guess you tried putting .com on that second one. You are going to say that you made a typo just now. Could you have made a similar typo in the past?  Did you actually ever use either those as credentials on your file in the past? That seems very weird. Had you been successful at actually using what look like example fake addresses, I can imagine that  .... well it's too weird to describe what I was envisioning could go wrong with that.

Are you sure you did not use a real email address that you used in the past? Could you have used some permution with maybe half of one email address with the other half of a different email address?

When you say " I just tried what you suggested above", I am not sure what you actually did. For example, how did you disconnect from the Internet?

Here is my next suggestion. Disconnect from the internet for sure. Try File->Restore of your newest and second-newest *.mbf Money backup files. Rather than restore to the remembered filename, Browse to your Documents folder and choose a new name. During the process you will still need the credentials that were in effect when the backup file was saved.

  • I have not tried you last suggestion yet.  I am going to try to answer the questions you asked about with typoes.  I am working from two different computers.  The two user e-mail address are  e-mail@msn.com" or " .come-mail@hotmail .   This is the  e-mail address the comes up when I open the program e-mail@msn.com". Then I type in my password.  I click on "I want sign into money directly, without access to online services.  A window error message pops up stating "The e-mail address or password are incorrect. Please try again."  Also in the popup box is the message "If you are sure that you typed your credentials correctly, the server may be under going maintenance. check the server status. Please try again later, or if you are opening an existing file, sign in without access to all online services."  I am off line now I can not access the internet from explorer or money.    or " toe-mail@hotmhatail

Did you actually ever use either those as credentials on your file in the past?

Yes I have used both. Sometimes the file would not open with e-mail@msn.com and the password. So I had to type e-mail@hotmail.com and the same password to access the data file.  This happens either online and off line.  It may seem weird but I have had this problem with this program ever since I installed it.  As long as it worked and I could get in to data file I didn't care.

Are you sure you did not use a real email address that you used in the past?

This is the e-mail address that I have been using with hotmail and the program vvvknollleovvv@hotmail.com and the password.  When I type that in now I get the following error message "Your sign-in information could not be verified. Go online, line and then reenter your sign-in information.  These are the error messages I receive when I try to sign in off line.  When I logged on the the computer this morning the date was still set at January 4 2011.  The computer is off line internet explorer will not access the internet.

I have used two different backup files using the file>restore you suggested above.  I did choose a new name to put the file into as you suggested.  This is what the sign up name is vvvknollleovvv@msn.com   Typed in the password tried signing in by checking  sign in to money directly. The error message receive was "Your sign in information could not be verfied. Go online, and then reenter your sign-in information.  I get the same message when I change the Sign-in-name to vvvknollleovvv@hotmail. com.  When I close the popup box the sign into money sign-in name goes back to vvvknollleovvv@msn.com .

  • Thanks for the information, help, and patience I found a password in my notes that I used 10 years ago the access msn.com  so I typed it in and the files opened.  Why it used that password from that long ago is a wonder.  It may have been a password from the older verision Money that I used when I first started using the program.

  • Glad you found an answer Imvertical. Unfortunately my previous Windows Live account that was connected with Microsoft Money appears to have been deleted. Attempted re-registering to no avail. Looks like the migration is finalized now anyway.

  • Hi,

Right, so I hit this forum since we had one computer with Money 2007 and it had the save password ticked. We had never done any research about the online services going down, since we didn't make use of them as such. Now, the computer where Money was running has failed, and we were able to retreive the files, but now the password is no longer saved since the file is on a new computer. We have no Idea what the password was when we used the live account 4 years ago. Is there a way to get out of this situation? Didn't Microsoft leave a service online just to help us avoid this problem with the file getting locked? if it is re-linked to the online live account just for one authentication, it should allow us to have this issue resolved right?

    Please help!

If the servers were still in place, you would still have needed your password to get into your file. If you had your password today, you could disconnect from the internet, log in offline and remove the LiveID.

A Live ID consists of and email address and a password. You need both. Write down email addresses and passwords that you had sometimes used. Give it some thought. Check for places where you might have written that information down. Then try the permutations.

  • Help! I am having the same problem so many people are also having as far as signing onto Microsoft Money 2007. I tried using and old password (I had to change my MSN live password some time ago due to malware). I tried signing in directly, without internet connection. I tried disconnecting my internet line. I tried changing the date on the computer to an older date. I tried all things at one time. Nothing is working. I just need to get into the program and print out reports.

    Can you help me?
