MCAD, MCPD, MCP Confusion RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

I have been an ASP.NET developer for 6 years but don't have any certifications so thought I'd look into getting certified.

I came across the pages and found the exams that add up a MCAD and was thinking about doing this. It also looks like doing one of thes exams would give MCP status? I noticed on the pages that the exams retired in March, although they still seem available on the prometric website.

If these exams have retired what is the replace for this? Is it the MCTS/MCPD approach? These exams seem to be more up to date but there is no mention of becoming a MCP with these exams?

Is there any need to become of MCP now or is the MCTS essentially the equivalent?

Could I still take one of the old exams seeing as they are still available just to get MCP status, and then take the MCPD or would there be no point in this?

If anyone has any advice as the best route for me to proceed it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Joe,

Well, basically MCAD/MCSD exams are available until the end of May, however MS does not guarantee that each and every testing center will provide it. Thus there is no 100% chance that you will make it by the end of May.

Generally I'd recommend you starting with MCTS certification and then upgrade to MCPD. (either .NET 2.0 or 3.5). As for the MCP status, it is true, passing MCTS/MCPD will not give you MCP status, however you get all the benefits as you join MCP Community :) (MCP status is only for "old generation" exams, e.g. MCSE/MCSA/MCSD/MCAD etc.). And you do not need to have MCP status to achieve MCTS/MCPD status.

    Cheers,

Here is an overview of the other certifications: Other Microsoft Certifications

The path Ben has receommended would also be the path that I would recommend too. Personally I think it is better to go for newer certifications as they will be valid for longer.
