Just Purchased a Sealed Retail Box of Windows 7 Ultimate - MSDN Key? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Quick background: Purchased new and sealed Windows 7 Ultimate on eBay.  Ingram Micro label and GLC-00181 SKU.  After reading just a little, it appears that I have a high quality counterfeit.  I installed but did not activate it, thinking that if this Windows 7 is real, why waste an activation?  Doubtful, but you never know.  MSDN key?

    PID:  00426-068-0021065-86898

Diagnostic from MGDIAG below.  Seems like a MSDN key to me, with that 068.  Can someone confirm, please?  Thank you!

  • Hello, jfinkow

Yes, you have an MSDN key.

As I am sure you are aware, these are not intended to be sold or used by non-subscribers.

I would recommend trying to get a refund, or dispute the charges if possible.

You can go to http://microsoft.com/piracy and submit a Piracy Report.

Lastly, I recommend buying your Windows from a well known trusted retailer. If in doubt, you can purchase from http://store.microsoft.com

The probability is that it's an MSDN-type key (although the -068- CID is  rare, so it's not easy to be certain).
David should be along later today and will be able to run the key through his checker to confirm the true status.
Did you get both 32-bit and 64-bit disks? - the full boxed pack?

  • Thank you for your reply.  Yes, I got the whole deal.  It is a great looking (realistic) retail box, and it arrived fully sealed and shrink wrapped.  And it may turn out to be real.  But after reading several other posts, I doubt it.  The 068; the packaging; the Ingram Micro label; and the SKU of GLC-00181 add up to a high quality counterfeit.  But you never know.  FYI, one other poster had 068 in their PID and it was a MSDN key.  Thanks again.

I expect it looks identical to this one:

    http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/8830/counterfeitcoa.jpg
    (sorry about the blurriness)

This one is 100% counterfeit confirmed by Microsoft..
Look at the red threading (or lack of it) a the bottom of the COA label.
    That is the real give-away.
It should be threaded though the label and the port holes should not be  perfectly cut.
In the picture they are perfectly cut and the red *threading* is just stuck under the holes in the label.

  • David, Thank you!  Thank you very much.

The level of professionalism in this counterfeit is impressive.  And the key would not be blocked until several months out.  By then it would be too late to dispute the charge or get a refund.  Yes, I admit I bought it on eBay.  But thanks to this forum and you, now I can get my money back.

    Thanks again!

  • flakie99,

Thank you for those images.  That is exactly what I bought on eBay.  The whole package is very impressive and a nicely done counterfeit.

Thanks to you and David and this forum, it will all work out for me.   FYI, the eBay seller listed the item as GLC-00182.  So when I got it and saw that it was 00181, that started this process rolling.

I may have found out after the purchase, but at least I found out before it was too late!

    What a relief!
