Project 2010 - Auto Update Task Start (if not yet started)

Question

Hi,
I've been using Project 2010 for a short while now and I'm slowly getting to grips with its capabilities.
There is one scenario which I am trying to find out if its possible to do: In my area of responsible we have a workflow process something like:
1. Analyse Requirements
2. Build Estimate
3. Submit Estimate for Cost Approval (Milestone)
4. Cost Approval (Milestone)
5..., 6, 7 etc. Build, Test, Release etc.
The thing is, it's not always clear when estimate approval will be provided (and consequently what the effective start dates of all subsequent tasks will look like).
Therefore it would be very useful if the Estimate Approved Task / Milestone Start Date could automatically update to the current system date (and as I have linked the subsequent tasks they will also be replanned accordingly).
Obviously once the point comes when the approval has been provided the % completion is adjusted upwards (usually to 100%). That way I can see quite quickly how the end project is going to look if the customer continues / decides to delay approval (or prioritise other work instead).
I hope that makes sense and would appreciate any advice on how Workflow items can be controlled, which are not subject to my own internal project management / planning.
Many Thanks
Regards
Mark

There is no automatic way to force the Start date of the project to continually update to the current date, unless you willing to write VBA code that will fire every time you open the project. A better approach would be to manually use the Move Project feature, found in the Schedule section of the Project ribbon, to move the Start date of the project any time you need to do so. The beauty of using the Move Project feature is that it not only moves the Start date of every task in the project automatically, it also adjusts constraint dates and Deadline dates automatically as well. Just a thought. Hope this helps.

Hi Dale, Many thanks for your reply. I'll explore both options further otherwise the manual adjusting will be my backup, Kind regards MarkWednesday, July 10, 2013 5:46 PM
