Error saying that my Office software in not genuine. RRS feed

  • I have the same problem as sandy1971.  When I open Outlook, I get an error message that the software is not genuine.  I purchased the Microsoft Office XP professional, including 5 Microsoft Office XP programs: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access through the Microsoft Home use Program several years ago.  I have the original disc.  here is my diagnostic information:

    The report is telling us that you have a nongenuine installation of a Volume Licensing-only edition of Office XP Pro with Front Page.  Your installation was done with a widely pirated and now-blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK).

    Volume Licensing editions of Office such as your installation of Office XP Pro with Front Page are not to be sold to individual consumers, and are only to be sold to larger businesses, educational institutions, and governmental agencies who need flexibility in installing and deploying many copies of Office.

    These Volume Licenses should not be sold to consumers because they are not permanent licenses; they are subject to a current Volume Licensing Agreement that has a finite term, sort of like a lease.  Consumers thinking they purchased permanently licensd software would understandably be upset when their software stopped working at the end of a lease.

    Here's what to do:

    Run a Product Key extracting utility such as the Magical Jellybean Keyfinder and record the product key that is currenlty applied to your Office installation.  Compare the product key currently installed to the product key that was given to you as part of the Home Use Program.  Hopefully, it's just a mixup with the product key, and we will find that somehow a nongenuine product key was used instead of the one that you got from the Home Use Program.  If that's the case, change the bad product key to the good product key using the instructions in this MS KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895456.

    If there is no mixup and the key that's currently installed is also the key that you were given, then unfortunately you were given a legitimate license for the Home Use Program because that product key that was never used for the Home Use Program---it is a special product key that is now permanently blocked.
