  • Question

  • Hello,

seems recently couple of forums were archived. Some of them has a replacement hint, but bunch of them were just retired without any warning or reason. Why does that happen? I understand it in the case of beta products, but where are we now supposed to ask questions and discuss about eg. XPS, Location API and others?

    Thanks,
    Jan

  • The answer... individual reasons. =^)

Most often they retire forums because they want to move to another forum or tool. They leave a sticky note at the top with the explanation.

Second, they are retiring the product for some reason and can't support it in the forums. Nobody works on it, so no one is in the forums as a moderator to help. They also usually leave a sticky note.

So is this about a specific forum? If so, please leave the URL.

If there's a retired product but an active community, then we can discuss opening the forum and instating community members as moderators. But it would have to be a large interest with solid Moderators for this to work.

If this is about XPS, then please leave the URL. I'll go see what the reason was. A quick search for XPS gave me Dell (it's the name of their laptop).

    Thanks!

  • Sure, for example - as I have mentioned - the XPS forum:

No sticky note and I would definitely not say the XPS is being retired, would you?

Yes, that looks like it fits in the unsupported category. The community slowed down middle last year before it was stopped. I think we'd have a tough time building up that community.

Here Adrian tries to send people elsewhere: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsxps/thread/2212baf4-8309-47bc-ab95-c1c4e98f82c6

Would you like me to ping Adrian and get the official explanation? (Assuming I can.)

    Thanks!
