Manually configure a domain name in WHS 2011? What happened to xxx.homeserver.com? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I installed WHS 2011 this weekend and was suprised to see how domain names were changed.  With all the uproar about the Drive Extender feature being removed I never noticed that the web access had significantly changed as well.

I went to set up the web access.  The router set up completed and I clicked on set up domain name.  I wasn't expecting it to attempt to use a real domain name and was suprised by the fact that it has moved away from the xxx.homeserver.com domain.  For SBS I can understand this, but for WHS it just suprises me.  So, I entered my domain name and was greeted with, "this isn't from one of our TWO providers, if you want to continue you have to transfer your domain name to one of these providers".  What?!  That's just plain bad.

Is there a way to manually set up the domain name registration that does NOT require you to host your domain at one of these two providers?  I found a link for SBS Essentials that talks about a manual configuration link, but the WHS doesn't seem to have that.

Funny enough, for the time being, my WHS xxx.homeserver.com link still works and points to the WHS 2011 box, but I suspect that will fall off eventually.

  • Thanks Phil.  I found this to be completely non-intuitive.  My options were create a new domain, or use an existing one.  Since I had been using WHS for years in my mind I wanted to use an existing domain.  After your answer I tried going down the "new domain" path and found were I can use a personalized Microsoft provided name (the xxx.homeserver.com option) and thus use my Live ID to link up to the WHS domain I already had previously.  It seemed odd to me to have to select "new domain" to get to one that was already used before.

It would have been nice if the screen had indicated something to the effect of choose new domain if you previously had a homeserver.com domain and wish to reclaim it, etc.

Things are all set up now.  Thanks for prompting me to dig deeper into the other option.

  • Mike, that's a bit odd. When I set up my WHS 2011, I just chose the "use an existing domain" option and supplied my existing xxx.homeserver.com domain. I was then asked for my Windows LiveID, and the domain was transferred onto the WHS 2011 system without problems.

  • When I choose "use an existing domain" it wasn't clear that I could use homeserver.com since it made no mention of it in the dialog.  My first attempt I tried to use my personal domain, which then led to my question above as to if there was a way to manual configure the domain and NOT have to use one of the specific providers.  I did try typing my xxx.homeserver.com domain in, but it's possible I mistyped something along the way (I was trying this late at night, or at least late for me).

  • I would add to this thread the fact that the online help from the "Use an existing domain" page also does not mention the possibility of homeserver.com domain names. Is it that WHS2011 no longer offers that to new WHS users so this "backdoor" method of specifying an existing homeserver.com name just grandfathers in WHSv1 users?

  • Thanks for the info - I am just setting up WHS 2011 and "discovering" the same things - unfortunate that I cannot continue with both WHS 1 and WHS 2011 - I am keeping WHS 1 running and will use it for a common storage, but and extra set of backups, web pages and common file pool would have been really good if it was possible to have both running together!
