Do you need Email Router if sending an email from CRM 2011?

Question
-
I'm really confused how to send emails from CRM 2011. We set up an Exchange server and outlook on a server and have CRM 2011 on another server. To be able to send emails from CRM do we still need to use the Email Router or would the Exchange server with Outlook be enough? And are there drawbacks to doing it this way?
I have read several guides but the tutorials just drop off rather than finishing the implementation of how to enable email sending/receiving from CRM 2011. Any good complete guides?

You would use the Email Router in conjunction with Exchange, as any outgoing emails would be sent via the router through Exchange (or whichever SMTP connection you designate in the Router) and would be independent of the users. The CRM Outlook client directs outgoing email through the user's Outlook client and delivers mail through that designated SMTP connection. In this case for emails to be delivered, the user would need to have Outlook running in order for their emails to get processed. The Email Router takes takes the responsibility of delivering emails away from the individual clients and centralizes it.

hello starter,
there are two ways to send e-mail from crm 2011.
1.Configure CRM2011 with Email router : this acts as a interface between crm 2011 application and your organization e-mailmessage system.
2.Configure CRM 2011 in Outlook.
look at this MVP's post. Email router Configuration - CRM 2011 Online & Exchange Online.
