UPDATES WILL NOT INSTAL RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

Is anyone else having the same trouble as me? Since around 8 May no updates will install - as if there's something dodgy on my computer (there isn't). Both my Vista Home Premium & my Office 2007 have been activated & validated as genuine, but still these updates will not instal. I can only presume that something happened on my computer around this date, but unfortunately, because there have been so many atempts to instal the updates (each with a Restore Point being created), my Restore Points (that I could go back to) only go back to around the beginning of June!!!! so I'm stuck - I'm just hoping that eventually everything will go back to normal.

One other (totally different) point - Am I the only person in the world who thinks that the lack of progress bar (compared with xp) is a very retograde step as far as Disk Defrag is concerned?

If anyone has an answer or suggestion to my update problem, I'd be very grateful - Many thanks (optimistically) in advance for any help received.

    Paul.

  • Paul,

Curious which updates are you talking about Vista OS or Office?  I understand the inconvenience you are currently experiencing and would like to provide you with some self-help options we have made available for our customers to address the issue you are currently experiencing. Please follow the steps outlined below as it could either resolve your issue or, if need be, provide us with additional information to determine the cause of this issue.

    1. Ensure you log onto the computer experiencing the issue with “Administrator” rights.
    2. Next we would like to confirm that you are running the most current version of the Genuine Advantage control on your computer. In order to do this please follow the below link and choose the “Validate Office” option.

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine
If the above steps did not resolve your issue lets continue with the steps below.

I would like to provide some of the self-help options we have made available for our customers to address these issues. If you could please follow the steps outlined below the diagnostics Web Site will attempt to resolve the validation errors you are experiencing with Office.
    http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/diag/RunDiags.aspx?displayLang=en

Next follow the on-screen prompts to resolve the issue if any of the checks at the above site fail. You can do this by choosing the “Resolve Now” button if it appears. If, after attempting to resolve the issue as per the instructions on the above site fails, please refer to the link below and run the MGA Diagnostics tool:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

You will be prompted to either “Run” or “Save” the tool. Choose to “Run” the tool and follow the on-screen prompts. You will receive an “Internet Explorer-Security Warning” dialog box for the “Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool”; you must choose to “Run” this tool when prompted.

Once you are presented with the Diagnostics tool choose “Continue” to run the diagnostic report. If the “RESOLVE” button is available after running the diagnostics, please click “RESOLVE” to allow the diagnostic tool to attempt a repair.
    1. After running the MGA Diagnostic tool, click on the “Windows” tab and then click on “Copy”.
    2. Please return to this post and “Paste” the results here for additional review.

If the issue still has not been resolved could you please provide us with the following information?

  • Dear Stephen,

Thanks for your message - I followed the first 2 links & both finished with "Validation Sucessful" screen. As requested, here is the copied info from the 3rd link - I hope you can make some sense of it - I'm afraid I don't understand too much about the technicalities of computers; I just use them & have never had any trouble so far. Having looked at the updates history (which is completely full of these same failed updates, it seems that the trouble is with OFFFICE 2007; Windows updates seem to be installing OK. I am thinking that my best bet may be to un-install, then re-install Office 2007 (+  Frontpage 2003 & Onenote 2003), but I will first wait to see if you or anyone else can come up with a reason for this to have happened in the first place. Once again, many thanks for your interest.

    Regards,

    Paul.

  • Hi Stephen,

I did have Frontpage 2003 + Onenote 2003. I tried uninstalling these, but then none of the Office 2007 would work at all.

I have just (Thurs am) re-installed Vista & stated again from scratch - everything is now working AOK & all current updates have installed!! (I'm not bothering with the 2003 programs in case they were causing the trouble, but I'm more inclined to blame something else that had got loaded inadvertantly - in future I shall revert to my xp experiances & not load anything from any magazine disc no matter how "above-board" they may seem).

Many thanks for all the help & suggestions that you have made.

    Regards,

    Paul.

  • Yes I am having this same problem and from what I've seen by searching it on the internet so are tons of other poor saps who have been caught up in this Microsoft generated nightmare with Vista. I have the home premium edition with Office 2003 and the junk email update for Outlook, that I get harassed over and over to install, fails with the ambiguous and useless Code 57A every time I try. As often as I've seen this issue referenced, why the heck hasn't something been developed to fix it, or a Microsoft knowledge base article with complete step by step directions been created?

  • I have the same problem - Vista Home Premium and Office 2003, and the same error code - 57A.  Is there a solution to this problem?

  • I understand this might be related to a permission problem with the registry... but how do I find out what failed or what registry entry it was trying to access? I don't see a place to get a log of the failure.
