Windows 7 PC connected to WHS RRS feed

  • Question

  • In the Windows Home Server Web Site Remote Access, Computers TAB
The WIN 7 PC's  appear as "Not supported on this operating system"  under the Status column.

    Why is that?

  • Only certain versions of Microsoft Windows support the ability to receive a remote desktop connection from afar. For Windows 7, it's Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate. I would guess that your PC has Windows 7 Home Premium installed.

  • That REALLY made sense.  Windows HOME Server won't accept Windows 7 HOME premium, then why would anybody buy Windows 7 that is a home user and has NO need for anything above Premium.  The reason I bring this up is there are going to be ALOT of P-Offed people who might buy a Laptop or Desktop that already has Windows 7 installed, get home and find out it Home Server won't connect.  I just want to know as that would really be bad for MS to do that to it's customers.

  • jd,

As has been pointed out ad nauseam here and elsewhere, this is out of the control of the Windows Home Server team. The Windows desktop teams don't want home products to have business capabilities, and the ability to connect to your desktop remotely is seen as a business capability.

The marketing literature calls out the limitation, both Microsoft's and that of other OEMs.

  • Ken,

I understand what you are saying, it is just going to be really sad that people go and buy a nice new shiny server with Vail on it get it home only to find that it won't backup their home computers.  This is like taking 2 steps forward and a WHOLE bunch backwards.  I know something about how marketing is, and this just does not seem to make any sense at all.  Say Joe average has 8 computers at home all running Windows 7 Home Prem. he then finds out none of them will be backed up to the server that he just purchased, what do you think his reaction will be.  Most customers are not going to buy Windows 7 Pro because that is being marketed with words that alot of people would understand as being in a more corporate view.  The following means what though.  I do see the column where Home Premium is not checked, but the words Home Server and Home Premium seem to be a non existent entity.

    From the Microsoft site

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/compare/default.aspx

"In addition to full-system Backup and Restore found in all editions, you can back up to a home or business network."

Personally I have the Professional version on all my desktops and Laptops, because I also run W2000 Advanced server and 2003 Server.  I guess I just don't see the street MS is taking with this way of things.  So why have a Home Server when it won't backup anything on the network

  • The original poster said nothing about his Windows 7 pc not being backed up, just not being able to remote into it from the homeserver.com site.

  • jd, we are only talking about Remote Desktop to the client. Everything else works. Please read the marketing materials for Windows Home Server, including the appropriate section of the Microsoft web site. It's stated explicitly there.
