Product key code lost and Windows Vista calling for me to register 2 years after purchase.

    Question

  • wallpaper/background goes black, stays black even if i try to change it...

    I do not see any COA SLP key on my computer... and I now have lost the original Product Key code...

     I also have in the bottom right hand corner of my screen, it says,
    "Windows Vista (TM)
    Build 6002
    This copy of Windows is not genuine."

     

    Please lay out in simple terms/instructions step by step to solve....

    Unless you can find the COA sticker on the case of your machine you are going to have severe problems - and will almost certainly end up having to do a System Recovery using the manufacturer's recovery process to have any hope of getting rid of the notification.
    The problem is that for some reason the OS is unable to properly read the BIOS SLIC table - which is what allows the machine to self-activate.
    Normally, the solution would be to change the Key to the one on the COA sticker, and than activate by telephone - a 5-minute job.
     
    Since you say that you cannot find the sticker, you have a major problem.
    You have a few options.
    1) System Recovery using the manufacturer's recovery system - which will destroy your data, so back up to external media first! If your inbuilt system is not working, and you don't have the disks, you can order a set from HP (which would be a good idea anyhow)
    2) Attempt a BIOS update with a Vista-compliant BIOS from HP - note that often this will not work, as BIOS updates usually omit the relevant area.
    3) Purchase a Full Retail (NOT an Upgrade) pack for Win 7 and do an upgrade install - note that this may have to be a Custom/Clean install - so again back up your data to external media first!
