My copy of windows is suddenly not genuine and is unresponsive to everything I've tried. Please, I just want this fixed. Please help. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Okay so about a week or so ago, when I booted up my computer, I got a message saying "You're copy of windows is not genuine". So now the back of my desktop is black and says "Windows is not genuine". So then I downloaded the update from microsoft. Now so when I try to enter my key I get the error

    "0xC004F074
The Software Protection Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see the Application Event Log for additional information."

So I ran my AVS and found quite a few threats and removed them. But still I get that error.

Microsoft's solution says to Troubleshoot errors from each event ID 12288 associated with the activation attempt.

But I have no idea how to do that.

    Can someone help?

  • The installed OS is Windows 7 Enterprise, using a KMS Volume License Key.

Such licenses require that the client have access to the organisation's own KMS Server for periodic activation (at least every 180 days)

Contact your System Administrator for assistance with activation.

If you purchased this copy of Windows retail, you were sold a counterfeit.

  •  You have a number of choices....

    1) order a set of Recovery media from the manufacturer - this will get the machine back to the initial ex-factory state, with Vista installed.

    2) Purchase an Upgrade copy of Windows 7, and clean-install it using the double-install workaround

    3) Purchase a full License for Windows 8 Pro (or Core) (OEM System Builder, with Personal Use license) and clean install that.

In all cases you would need to back up your data to external media prior to the reinstall, since all options will wipe the drive.

Which version and edition you have to purchase would depend on what you intend to do with it.

You almost certainly do NOT need Win 7 Ultimate - and you may not need Win 8 Pro.

  • To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
     Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
      - **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
