Domains used in Forums and Login RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

Our company has a VERY restrictive firewall, and since some forum update a while ago, most of the functionality on the forums disappeared. It seems this happened because the jquery reference changed to some place called ajax.aspnetcdn.com?

So, the question is, which domains are required to properly log in to and use the forums?

    http://ajax.aspnetcdn.com
    https://*.live.com
    http://*.microsoft.com
    https://*.passport.net
    https://secure.wlxrs.com

Any / some / all of these? Anything else?

Any explanation on why we need so many different Microsoft domains? Without any research on the subject, doesn't just about anything Google end with google.com

Also, what are the possible sites listed in the MSDN Library search results? Or where can I find this information?

    Thanks

  • Would have thought this kind of information had been available without having to download some crazy web debugger software..

Anyway, this is what Fiddler listed when I surfed around the forums, login and MSDN Library pages (with AdBlock, I don't know whether it makes a difference or not) :

    • jquery.com (NEW)
    • s-msft.com (NEW)
    • live.com
    • microsoft.com
    • msn.com
    • passport.com
    • aspnetcdn.com ("Microsoft Ajax Content Delivery Network")
    • wlxrs.com (Something to do with Windows Live login)
    • 2o7.net (Adobe tracking cookies)
    • verisign.com (Verisign SSL certificates)
    • webtrends.com (Webtrends analytics)

I suspect the last three are not necessary to successfully use any of the forum features though.

And, since I couldn't find a list of MSDN Library search result sites, this is what I got by trying various searches:

    • asp.net
    • msdn.com
    • microsoft.com
    • stackoverflow.com
    • codeproject.com
    • codeplex.com
    • iis.net
    • silverlight.net

  • The best thing to do in answering your question is to run a fiddler trace (google fiddler) and see what domains the various client cache is depending on. That should give you a list. These domians are necessarily required as 'log in' dependencies but instead there are a few domains contianing dependent resources (scripts, references to ads, css, etc). Hope this helps.

  • Thanks, that's more or less what I got with the exception of neudesicmediagroup.com and zedo.com, which are ads.

  • Looks like some dimwit thought it would be great idea to add yet another domain to this pile.

All the i*.social.microsoft.com are now i*.social.s-msft.com

    Who needs CSS anyway.

Also, ban & delete the posts of that hidden link spammer Cloris already. Another reason to remove custom styling.

  • It has top do with the recent changes to the layout, which Brent has been reporting on.

s-msft.com does not need to be used. jquery.com is required for the checkboxes (unread) on top to work.

    I love NoScript.

  • I did not find anything related to jquery, layout or domain changes in the post you linked to, or any of the other recent announcements in that forum for that matter.

Most, if not all of the stylesheets used on these forums now come from s-msft.com. I doubt people would want to be without that.

Yes, it seems they changed the jquery reference again (see top of thread.) Those checkboxes are just a fraction of the features broken without jquery.

I've heard NoScript is nice for blocking unwanted scripts, advertisements and such, I just don't know what it has to do with these forums or this thread.

  • I did not realize that, oops. I am not blocking the sites, i am blocking all sites from running scripts, however, unless i allow them.

Using NoScript will block this site from working (smoothly), as javascript is used extensively.
