Visual Studio 2012 RC -- deployment RRS feed

  • Question

  • Ok I have installed the RC version of VS2012, so far not happy.  I have tried a couple internal project and it is buggy so I switched back to 2010.  I am sure I can get use to the interface and the other changes so I assumed I would just wait for release version and try again.

Oh well this morning I decided to try the RC version on one of my larger project and I recieved three errors converting the projects... Seems VS no longer has setup projects and does not support them so all my setup projects are dead.

We do use clickonce for internal software, mostly everyone hates it but it is simple enough.  But for external customer we use setup projects, I personally don't see a choice.  As I unstand it we have to use InstallShield (hated years ago but hopefully it improved).  Ok so I installed the free version and have some questions?

    1) Can I deploy x64?  it seems I can only do this with permimum version?

    2) Can I import old setup projects?  I though I saw it but can't find it again.

    3) Is there another solution?

At this point I may not upgrade for a very long time, really truely not happy with the long list of changes!

  • If you choose a fully-featured version of InstallShield then yes you need to pay for it, but if you look at the list I posted there are some free ones. WiX, for example costs nothing, is what Microsoft uses to ship some of their products, and has support via the WiX-Users mailing list.

  • Hi John,

I am moving your case to the ClickOnce and Setup & Deployment Projects forum so that you can get better support there.

    Thanks.

  • You should go to InstallShield community support for questions about the version that replace VS setup projects. The Visual Studio IDE is just the hosting shell.

There is a list of tools to build MSI files here:

  • Yea well I tried that, seem the support forums don't work.  The website in their help files is no longer valid.

Why did MS pick them?  Why not just continue to have the same deployment options as the past version?  why change?

At least they could have picked a company that had a clue what they were doing...

  • Thanks for the link to the support pages.

Basically it seems if I want to deloy projects with Visual Studio 2012 I need to spend a great deal more money.  I am still not sure why MS decided to discontinue support for deployment.  When I purchase Visual Studio I expect there to be a way of getting my products to my customers without having to pay additional fees to another company.  Could someone enlighten me as to the logic of MS course change?

I mean give me a break, $2,300 so I can do a simple install on a x64 bit system.  This is just wrong!

The following is from Flexera software:

    Regarding your call on
Tuesday, InstallShield LE and InstallShield Express do not support building 64
bit installations. Pro or Premier is required for this. The following link
    compares the editions:

    From the Flexera website

    InstallShield 2012 Spring Premier ($4,499.00)
    InstallShield 2012 Spring Professional ($2,399.00)

  • Yes if I choose the full featured version I would expect to pay for it.  What I want is for MS to bring back the basic installer they had, still don't see why they removed it.

Thanks for the link, I will look into it...
