Project Server 2007 backup to restore to fresh install

Question
-
Is there a proper way to capture all of the data from a current installation of Project Server 2007 so that I can do a restore on a fresh install on the same server. I have some hard drive issues that are forcing me to rebuild the server. I want to be able to backup all of my data so that after I do a rebuild and new install, I will be able to restore everything, so that no data is lost from pwa.
also, i have SQL Server 2008 installed on this server. Is there a proper way to do the install of Project Server and PWA so that it utilizes 2008 instead of the out of the box SQL 2005 Express.
Thanks
Newbie.

Hi - What are you looking to do? All the data or configuration only?
If it is all data - best to follow a the following process - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd857479%28office.12%29.aspx
Or if it is just configuration there is a tool called playbooks which can help with this - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc197393%28office.12%29.aspx
Hope this helps.

Yes my friend there is a proper documented way to back and restore your PWA 2007 instance to another server. But it also depends is your current instance is configured, if you reply to my queries below - i will be more than happy to help in migration:
- Is your current PWA site resides in a separate content DB? or it shares the same DB of your web application?
- Do you have any custom lists with data on your PWA site?
- Is any branding applied to your PWA site?
- If you only have to migrate the Project Data, Project Sites and the current PWA configurations (which is required in most cases than follow the steps:
- Follow the technet article to backup and restore using the builtin tool: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd207307%28office.12%29.aspx
- Once you restored all the 5 databased successfully, i.e. 4 Project Server databases and 5th is the content db of your Web application (if your PWA is sharing the same db)
- Provision the new PWA instance using the 4 databases.
- Try accessing the project workspace of any of your project, if you encounter this: "The page not found" - you have to relink your sites.
- Create a new web application on port, lets say 999
- Remove the content database of this new web application from the central administration
- Add the content database of your old web application ( which we have just restored) to this new web application
- Download Project Resource Kit (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=A33D253C-6424-48E4-B87E-0861D1977BB7&displaylang=en)
- Extract to your local folder
- Run the command prompt
- Browse to the folder and type: RelinkAllWSSSites.exe http://<newWebAPP:999> http://server/newPWA
- Now browse your PWA, and you should see all Projects and their sites.

Thank you both for your responses. I really appreciate it and will give everything a try. Just to give some quick answers to your questions.
It's a single stand-alone box with all dbs being stored in the built-in SQL 2005 express. Both in their default locations.
I do have custom lists and some branding. I don't mind losing the lists, as I have them templated already, but if I could transfer the sites, project files, and data, then i would be fine.
I will give your suggestions a try and let you know how it worked.
If this works, and the data comes back, is there a way to then migrate the dbs to SQL 2008 that I already have installed on this server?
Thanks
-Ken

Hello Ken,
The method mentioned above is fine to migrate the data - that will not be an issue.
Just out of interest - why are you using SQL 2005 Express. Did you install Project Server with the stand-alone option?

Dharmesh

Ken,
If you have plans to migrate to SQL 2008 later, then do it in the same go - rather than migrating to another server now and than migrating to WSL 2008. You have to follow the same procedure.
Also regarding lists data, creating template and restoring will change the modification data/time stamp of the content of the lists - if you ok with than than fine, else follow the article in my blog to migrate the content without any change in the data/time stamp of the data.

Yes, I installed using the stand-alone option since everything resides on a single server. i was going to try to do the custom option but everything ended up greyed out so i only had the stand-alone. wondering if that was because i pre-installed wss. but that didn't give me an option to point to a different sql. If i had pre-created the databases in the SQL 2008, would it have recognized and properly installed there?Wednesday, December 22, 2010 12:56 PM

Yes, I would like to use the SQL 2008 instead of the express. Should I first migrate the data to the 2008 before I do the rebuild? I am doing this all on my development server now to test before I do the actual move. Should I reinstall wss and project server so it points to the sql 2008 instead of the out of the box? I can give that a shot if you think that is the best way.
And i don't mind losing the date/time stamp.

So, as a quick update, my customer decided that he just wants a clean/fresh install of project server. There is not as much data in the sites as I thought. Plus they want to rename some things and setup some new templates. So, looks like I don't need to do the migration.
With the clean install, what are the best steps for installing Project Server to use SQL 2008?
I appreciate all the help you all have provided.

Ken, this following technet article best describes the installation steps you should follow whilst configuring your SQl 2008 to work with Project Server : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff426872.aspx
And its a good new that you do have to migration now :), just do the clean installation of SQL first and then create you Farm -I hope this helps.
