The exact message is as follows:

    Product information not valid

the following product information programmed into the system board is missing or invalid.

System Board (00A): Product Name Product Configuration Product Serial Number and Product Number

This started about a week ago. Then the not genuine message poped up. We use AVG and my husband says its up to date.

This appears to be an HP problem – to quote from their forums....

The problem you are having can only be fixed by an HP Field Tech. I am one and I've fixed this issue before. It's an advisory that's only distributed internally at HP. Put in a service ticket. Any tech that has the latest s/n changer can fix this. Once the tech has booted the s/n changer, they'll put the info in like always, only this time, there will be two extra options. For any technician reading this, it'll ask something related to a 25-digit hex value that says (hit enter if unknown.) Instead, enter 25 zeros and hit enter. Then, on the softstylus option, just hit enter to leave it at defaults. That completes the latest version of the tool. This should fix your problem.

There is a solution – if you have the patience to read through the chaff :)

  • Also, when I start my computer it states that information is missing. This just started recently. I don't  know if that matters.

  • Locate the COA label affixed to your computer (in the battery compartment of some laptops) and write down the 25-character product key.  Click Start and type "activate", Enter.  Follow the instructions to enter the COA product key and reactivate.

You do not give enough info about "information is missing" to know what you are talking about.

What EXACT messages do you get? – this could be an indicator of either a (possibly removed) malware infection, or of system problems.
What Anti-Virus are you using? Is it up-to-date?
