Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) Installation Fails RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I was certified as geniune for years.

I tried to install Norton Security 2008 which failed then I got a messages that said I was not geniune so I started to try to validate XP but whenever I try to install the WGA tool it fails even with administrator account. Now I cant validate XP and I cant finish the installation of Norton because  XP is not valid?

What do I need to do to install WGA?

    Thankyou

  • Mike,

Thank you for working with us while we try and provide you with a resolution.  I have tried different resolves surrounding possible scenarios for WGA based on the feedback and error codes received. The problem which you are experiencing is not within the scope of WGA.

Your last post provided good information. Error code 0x80004005 coupled with messaging DllRegisterServer in msxml3.dll failed. In reality, you are having a problem with Windows Updates rather than Windows or Office Genuine Advantage.  Briefly I researched the error code you received and would like to provide you with some information. Please visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932628/en-us

Please follow the Help and Support links on the Windows Updates page to find assistance in solving your Windows Updates difficulties.

Or, visit the WU Solution Center here:  http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527

Or, have a look at the WU support forum:  http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&lang=en&cr=US

Another alternative should you not find resolve please submit a service request with Microsoft Product Support:  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=52029. Hopefully the above information will resolve your problem. Should it not then hopefully I have provided you with enough information to get a resolution. Take care and should you have future WGA problems please visit me again here :-).

  • Mike,

Please try the manual installation by following the steps below.

    WGA

    1.       Click the Start button, then click “Run”

    2.       Type in “iexplore http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=39204” then click ‘OK’. You will be prompted to download “LegitCheckControl.cab”.

    3.       Choose Open. Once this completes, a window will open showing two files, LegitCheckControl.dll and LegitCheckControl.inf. Leave this window open for now.

    4.       Click the Start button, then click “Run”

    5.       Type in “system32”, then click ‘OK’. (If you are running Windows XP, you may need to click “show files” to allow access to this system directory.)

    6.       Drag the LegitCheckControl.dll file from the window that was open into the system32 directory. If you are prompted to overwrite a file, choose ‘Yes’ to overwrite any existing file. (If you are running Vista, you may be prompted to provide administrator permission to complete the action. If so, press “Continue” and allow it.)

    7.       Click the Start button, then click “Run”

    8.       Type “regsvr32 LegitCheckControl.dll”, and then click ‘OK’.

    9.       You should see a dialog saying “DllRegisterServer in LegitCheckControl.dll succeeded.”

    Thank you,

  • Mike,

Please run the MGA Diagnostic Tool and provide us with the results. In turn we can analyze what you are experiencing and work on a resolution for you. Please download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

Step 2 is tell us about the COA. Tell us:

    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?
    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
    4. DO NOT post the Product Key.
    5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

    Thankyou,

  • Hi Stephen the details asked for are:

    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?   Pro
    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?  Yes but '3 - OEM System Builder'
    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
    4. DO NOT post the Product Key.
    5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

I tried to install Norton Security 2008 which failed then as a result my windows installation no longer thinks its a genuine product.

When I try to install the dll to validate windows on the main method It doesnt work on the alternative method I get

    Validation Not Completed: ActiveX Error

    [0x80080296]

If I manually install LegitCheckControl.dll it failed to register with a Return code of 0x80070005

You have the dianostic above the validator is not installing.

    Any other methods available?

    Regards

  • Hi Mike,

Did you try to visit http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ ?

I have had the similar experience, but WGA could be successfully installed by visiting this site.

Please try to click the button to validate the Windows in this site, and install ActiveX control also.

    Good Luck!

  • Yes thanks tried that several times, both methods. I checked the event log and media player 11 (which installed its self) was failing so I uninstalled it hoping to roll back to version 10 but because windows thinks its not genuine I cant reinstall version 10. so I'm in the same spot...

I finally got advice back from Norton which is 'Re-install Windows as its confused'. As you can imagine thats a lot of work to get the machine back to its last good installation.

  • Hi Mike,

Before doing re-installation of Windows, why don't you try the recovery installation of WIndows?

If you have a Windows CD, it can be done by just booting from CD.

If you don't have a Windows CD, boot the Windows as safe mode, and execute C:\I386\WINNT32.EXE.

I could recover my problem by this method, when my Windows became suddenly slow.

Your effort will be much smaller than doing re-installation.

  • I followed these instruction but at the end where it is suppose to say "DllRegisterServer in LegitCheckCOntrol.dll suceeded - it gave me an error message that says" Load Library (LegitCheckControl.dll) failed- invalid access to memory location.  Do you have any other suggestions what to do now?
