Vista Activation Problems. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Two weeks ago I purchased a Acer Quad Core computer from Circuit City. When I got home, there was a copy of Windows Vista Premium already installed on the computer and it was in french. Myself, I don't know any french, so this became a problem for me. After looking through the contents of the box a couple of times, I realized that there was no OS Cd with the computer. So, after searching through my CD's I found my Windows Vista Premium CD that I received when I purchased my laptop from Gateway earlier this year and installed it. During the trial period, before activation is 100% required, I tried activating it. The key that is on the side of my computer (after being entered into the activation window) is said to be invalid. Also, I am getting a message at the bottom of the screen that says

    Windows Vista (TM)
    Build 6000
This copy of Windows is not genuine

I know the CD works, as I've used it before.
When I start up the computer, I get the regular log in screen. After typing my password I am prompted to activate Windows Vista.
I cannot pass this screen, even when I select "Access your computer with reduced functionality. This will also allow you to buy a product key online".
I just purchased a top of the line, very expensive computer; I'm not going to go out and buy another copy of an OS that's supposed to come with my PC.

Anyone have any ideas or tips for me on what I can do to activate my PC?

    Thanks,
    William

Edit: I cannot run the Diagnostics tool, as I cannot get my system to move past the activation page.

  • Hello,

It appears that to resolve your issue, you must Activate Windows using the "Activate by Phone" method. Please follow the below option that that best fix your given issue scenario:

    a) If you have access to the Start button: Click the Start button, and type in "slui.exe 4" in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.

    b) If you do not have access to the Start button: Reboot and login to Vista, a dialog window will come up. In that window, click the option "Access computer with reduced functionality". Once you do that, Internet Explorer or Firefox browser will open. In the address bar type "c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe" press enter, a new window will come up, type: slui 4 and hit enterand follow steps to Activate over the Phone.

NOTE: The key to this process is that you need to talk to a Live Activation Rep! When you first call, you will be interacting with an Automated Voice, either select the option to talk to a Live Rep or if there is no option, do not enter any numbers. This should force the automated voice to tansfer you to a Live Rep.
