  • Question

  • In February, I bought a refubished computer that was installed with windows 7 ultimate. The shop that sold me the computer did not give me the original installation disc out of concernes for piracy. Before hand it came with windows Vista basic.  For a few months it worked great. Now all of a sudden the screen is black with a message that says Windows 7 Build 7600 this version of windows is not genuine.

The computer is a Compaq presario Sr2163wm

  • Hello Blward,

It means that the computer was sold to you with a hacked and cracked nongenuine copy of Windows 7, along with a widely pirated installation of Office Professional 2003.

So both the Windows and Office installed on the computer are pirated copies.

As bertmace26 briefly mentioned, since this is a name brand (HP/Compaq) computer, if the computer has a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) affixed to it, the computer is most likely still licensed to run the version and edition of Windows listed on the CoA.  According to the info at the computer's support page, it probably came with Windows Vista:  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=3339275&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us&submit=Go%20»

Your best option is to order the recovery discs from HP/Compaq and put the original shipping edition of Vista back onto the computer, whereupon it will be running a Genuine installation of Windows once again.  Do not reinstall your Office, as that copy of Office is widely pirated and the product key is now blocked.

If you prefer W7, after installing Vista from the recovery discs, purchase a retail upgrade license for W7 from a trusted and well established local or online retailer (stay away from eBay and the like) and upgrade to W7.  This article has a chart with the approved upgrade paths from Vista to W7:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd772579(WS.10).aspx

  • Just some additional information:

The reason we know this copy of Windows is Hacked and is Non-Genuine is that the Product Key being used was a Master OEM Win 7 key, that Microsoft issued to Lenovo.  The Key leaked to the internet before Windows 7 was released and because it was leaked so early, Microsoft noticed it and had time to tell Lenovo and Lenovo never used that key.

So, any Windows using the leaked Lenovo OEM product key (also know as the 22TKD key because those are the first 5 digites of the key http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=22TKD) is by definition, Non-Genuine, because No copies of Windows were ever sold, with that Product Key.

    Thank you,

    Darin MS

  • If this is the case then can I buy a licencing key or other validation tool directly from microsoft to make it valid if the repair shop can't help?  I'm not sure if the computer would qualify the specifications for either a standard version of Windows 7 or Vista due to having only 512 MB of ram.
    Saturday, May 15, 2010 3:24 AM
  • yes but the first thing if I was you is add more ram in at least 512 or more in to get it 1 gig our more you will feel a differents I/m at 6 gig and nothing slows me down and buy a copy win 7 home pre from the ms store

  • "if the repair shop can't help"??
That's what repair shops are supposed to be able to do - a reinstall of a
common operating system is SOP, and they *should* have no problems.
Your machine is definitely sub-spec on RAM - although Win7 will run, it's
likely to be sluggish. The shop should *never* have put in the 'upgrade' in
    the first place.
I would say that you have 'cause to complain' under whatever Trade
Descriptions legislation exists where you are - quite apart from the piracy
aspect - and could demand a refund as being not-fit-for-purpose.

  • Hello Blward,

Is there a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) somewhere on the computer case?  If so the computer is already licensed to run the Windows listed on the CoA.  HP/Compaq may be able to send you recovery discs for as little as $15.

And geez, put some more RAM in that thing! ;-)  It takes 2 modules of PC2-5300 which is pretty inexpensive:  http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Presario%20SR2163WM

    Good Luck!

  • According to the specs, it's actually PC2-4200 RAM - but 5300 should also
    work

Interesting - it shipped with 512MB, and Vista - How the heck HP/Compaq got
away with that one I have no idea! It must have run like a slug on ____!
