Server 2008 R2 Build 7601 This copy of windows is not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have server that has been running for a year and suddenly popped up with this copy of windows is not genuine.

I have tried a bunch of solutions that I have found on this forum and around the internet, so it is possible I have made it worse.

    When I run SLMGR /DLV I get:

On a computer running Microsoft Windows non-core edition, run 'slui.exe 0x2a 0xC004F012' to display the error text.
    Error: 0xC004F012

When I run SLMGR /ATO I get: Error: product not found

When I run SLUI 4 I get: Windows must be restored. An unauthorized change was made to Windows. You must reinstall or restore Windows system files to activate.

    Here is the MGA report:

  • There are no significant errors in either the SFC log, or the background CBS data.

Unfortunately, this implies that we may be on a losing wicket as far as isolating the cause is concerned, and the quickest solution is probably going to be a repair install.

If you still want to continue troubleshooting, I'm happy to do so - just let me know.

  • Please first try recreating Licensing Store.

    Recreate the Licensing Store

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt

Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

    net stop sppsvc

(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

    CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

    REN tokens.dat tokens.bar

    net start sppsvc

    slui.exe

After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.

You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.

If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report.

(Note: the Line 'CD %win......\SoftwareProtectionPlatform' is all on one line - it may be broken in the Forum listing)

  • I rebuilt the licensing store. I must have done it before, because there was already a tokens.bar file. I did it again anyway and created a tokens.bak file. I restarted the sppsvc and ran slui.exe.

Result: Windows must be restored. An unauthorized change was made to Windows. You must reinstall or restore Windows system files to activate.

Reboot result: The genuine message is gone from the corner. But running SLUI 4 brings it right back.

  • Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

    then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

  • Thank you for taking the time to look at this. I was coming to the same conclusion but wanted someone to take a look and see before I just rebuilt the server. I don't have a backup of this server so it will just be a redo from scratch.

    Thanks again,

    Micah

Please do not post to a thread that is almost 2 years old.  You need to create a diagnostic and post the results in your own new thread:

    MGA Diagnostic Report:

To properly analyze and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the diagnostic report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop -http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )

    Once downloaded, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, after a short time, the Continue button will change to a Copy button.
Click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your post.

    One Issue Per Thread:

Most Activation and Validation issues look the same, on the surface, but can have many different causes and fixes. This is why we ask for a diagnostic report and this is also why we ask that you create your own thread for your issue (in other words, don't post your issue in another person's thread).

It just becomes too complicated to try to troubleshoot multiple different issues in the same thread.

    New to the Forums?

Note that if you are new to these forums, you may find that you are unable to post due to a restriction on the inclusion of links and pictures.
Simply delete the only lines that contain links -  this will allow the remainder of the report to upload (and those lines are not generally critical to the report anyhow)

Please do not read this sentence. Please ignore the previous sentence.
