Does a WHS 2011 restore result in an optimally-defragmented disk? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm curious how WHS 2011 locates files within the target partition(s) when you do a full system restore.  Does it replicate whatever fragmentation pattern existed (which seems unlikely), or does it write each file in a continuous space?  Does it apply any optimization when placing heavily-used system files?

  • Since Windows Home Server doesn't really back up files, but rather used clusters of data, and since it lays those clusters back in the same place during a restore, I would expect it will reproduce the same level of fragmentation that was present on the source disk.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
