Can't validate WinXP

Question
-
Hello,
I recently purchased Office 2007 Home & Student edition and installed it on a Dell laptop running Win XP. Ever since then I've been getting messages about my Windows not being genuine.
I've tried running the validation procedure many times and it always fails the "Windows validation ActiveX loaded" step and the "Validation Self-help ActiveX loaded" step.
I also ran the MGA diagnostic tool and received the results shown below. When I try to resolve the issue, it just leads me back to running the same diagnostics again and again with the same results.
Thanks,
Terry

tlg62,
I ran your diagnostic report and is showed issues revolving around the validation control not being installed. I would like to provide the following information and steps for you to follow to attempt resolving this issue.
Step 1: OGA Manual ActiveX Installation
1. Click the Start button, then click “Run”
2. Type in “iexplore http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=39204” then click ‘OK’. You will be prompted to download “LegitCheckControl.cab”.
3. Choose Open. Once this completes, a window will open showing two files, LegitCheckControl.dll and LegitCheckControl.inf. Leave this window open for now.
4. Click the Start button, then click “Run”
5. Type in “system32”, then click ‘OK’. (If you are running Windows XP, you may need to click “show files” to allow access to this system directory.)
6. Drag the LegitCheckControl.dll file from the window that was open into the system32 directory. If you are prompted to overwrite a file, choose ‘Yes’ to overwrite any existing file. (If you are running Vista, you may be prompted to provide administrator permission to complete the action. If so, press “Continue” and allow it.)
7. Click the Start button, then click “Run”
8. Type “regsvr32 LegitCheckControl.dll”, and then click ‘OK’.
9. You should see a dialog saying “DllRegisterServer in LegitCheckControl.dll succeeded.”
After you finish the above steps please restart the computer and try to validate Windows again: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine. Please locate the “Validate Windows” button in the upper right hand corner. Double click on the button and follow the guidance. Were you able to pass Windows Validation successfully?
Should you have additional problems please review the knowledge base (KB) article “How to activate Windows XP” located @ http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307890&sd=techh .
Restart the computer and contact the Microsoft Activation Center to re-activate Windows should there be problems should you need assistance. Activation and registration of a Microsoft product is located @: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851/en-us .
The Office Activation Center can be reached at (888) 652-2342 from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM Pacific Time
I hope this helps,

Hi Rick,
Thanks for the information. It worked fine until Step 9.
Instead of a success message I got:DllRegisterServer in LegitCheckControl.dll failed. Return code was: 0x80070005
Thanks,

Hi Terry,
Sorry to hear it didn't work. At this point I would recommend the following resources for activation. Contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:1.
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Activate Windows.
Or, click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area.2.
Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.
3.
Click Read the Windows Product Activation Privacy Statement, click Back, and then click Next.
4.
Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box, and then click Next.
Note The number appears now and differs based on the location that you select.5.
When activation is completed and you receive the following message, click OK.
You have successfully activated your copy of Windows.
More information on how to activate Windows XP at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307890
Also you may reference the following site for various telephone activation centers: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851
Here is the website for international support and the contact information:
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/resources/vol/numbers.mspx
After you finish the above steps please restart the computer and try to validate Windows again: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine. Please locate the “Validate Windows” button in the upper right hand corner. Double click on the button and follow the guidance.
Best Wishes,

Hi Rick,
I don't have an "Activate Windows" icon in my System Tools folder. Is there some way to launch this from the Start->Run window?
I tried doing the phone activation anyway and the first thing it asked was if I had the "Activate Windows" program running ... so I got stuck there. Thanks,
Terry

Hi Terry,
If you do not have the specified file, then I suggest the other links above involving telephone activation.

I hope this helps.

Rick,
There's a catch-22 here. When I try activating by phone and the first thing it asks is "Are you in front of the computer with the activation window open?".
I reply "No" and it says "Try again later when you have the activation window open. Good-bye."
It seems that I can't activate on line or by phone unless the activation window is open; and I don't have an icon in System tools to launch the activation so I can't open the activation window.
Does this icon not appear if windows XP has been activated in the past? This laptop is 4-5 years old and updates from MS always worked fine until I installed Office 2007.

Terry,
Let's forget about "Windows Activation" for the time being and focus on Windows Validation. I believe your original issue revolved around not being able to load an Active X Control which resulted in you not being able to validate. When I gave you the instructions on how to work with the Active X Control, you said the LegitCheckControl.dll failed.
To further assist you, I need to know about your customer experience. You mentioned that you installed Office Home & Student and your computer's been giving you messages about not being Genuine. Then you said it worked fine till Sept. 9.
What exact error messages did you get? Did the error messages come right after the install of Office or possibly a little after?
Things to consider. Some of these things can currupt your Internet Explorer browser which assists in your Validation: Has your computer in it's current state (meaning you have not done a factory restoration), been infected with a virus? Has there been any Internet browsing activity which could have altered your Internet Explorer browser? Are you running a reputable Antivirus program and not "Freeware"? Has your computer, mainly Internet Explorer, been free of pop up blockers, spyware killers, and toolbars?
Since part of what is stopping us is the Active X Control Issue, I am going to recommend the following. Please visit https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527 and submit a FREE support request for Windows Update problem which you are experiencing. They may be able to troubleshoot your Active X Issues as well.
If you answered yes to "Things to consider" portion of this post, I will recomment the following. Please call our PC Safety line at 1-866-PCSAFETY or 1 (866) 727-2338. This phone number is for virus and other security-related support free of charge. It is available 24 hours a day for the U.S. and Canada.Detailed information including selecting various regions for support can be located at:
http://www.microsoft.com/protect/support/default.mspx
If those avenues fail, by all means follow the instructions on the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/ServiceRequest.aspx?displaylang=en&sGuid=412f4668-f651-477a-88ef-1733b42327da
I hope this information helps. You do not need to answer the questions I asked above on this thread. I hope the support links can assist you further.
