The Help file (F1) explains this better than I could as follows:
"
Change the default template
Whenever you open a new Streets & Trips map, the map is based on a default
template (New North American Map.stt) with specific settings. If you want to change these settings, you can do so by changing this default
template. For example, you can change the default
template so that it shows the
Route planner pane, is zoomed into a specific map area, and is set to the political map style each time that you open a new map.
To create a default template
-
Create a new map or modify an existing map with the features you'd like to see each time you open a new map.
How?
-
On the File menu, click Save as.
-
In the Save As dialog box, click the arrow next to the
Save as type box, and then choose Map
template from the list.
-
In the Save in box, browse to the following folder (depending on your operating system):
-
For users of Windows Vista, browse to ProgramData\Microsoft\Microsoft Streets & Trips\17.0\Templates
-
For users of Windows XP, browse to \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft Streets & Trips\17.0\Templates
-
Click New North American Map.stt.
-
Click Save.
-
When prompted about replacing New North American Map.stt, click Yes to replace the Streets & Trips default
template with your map. " I found it by doing a simple search in Help.
