After a Windows Update last night, my Windows 7 is no longer genuine RRS feed

  • Windows ran an automatic update around 3:00 AM, and on reboot suddenly went to a saying it is non genuine. 

    I am running a Dell Studio XPS 1647. I had extreme problems with the computer a few months back and ended up reinstalling Windows 7 through Microsoft's programs (so I'd assume they'd be genuine). I reentered the product key for the reinstall, and had no problems up until last night. Attempted to do a System Restore right when I saw the issue, but it came up with an error saying the restore point was unable to draw on (x) files to perform the restore. Now if I attempt to restore, Im told there are no restore points. 

    Additionally, Ive attempted to just reenter my product key, and get the message "A problem occurred when Windows tried to activate. Error Code 0xC004F063"

  • I have changed the product key to match what the product key should be. An issue I can see with it, however, is that the product key on the case of my laptop is unreadable..that whole sticker is pretty faded and you cant get any info from it. I ran a program back when I did the reinstall to pull the product key from the system  (magicjelly, I believe) , and thats the one that is entered (seen above in the diagnostics). Thats also the one that I'm trying to enter now, but I am getting the "A problem occurred when Windows tried to activate. Error Code 0xC004F063" error.

  • The 063 error is typical where the machine has been reinstalled using retail media, rather than the manufacturer's Recovery media, using the manufacturer's OEM_SLP Key.

    This is because the Recovery disks contain data no present in the retail media, which is required to be able to properly activate the OEM_SLP  Key in conjunction with data from the machine's BIOS - this activation occurs on every boot.

    The normal solution is to change the Key to the one on your COA sticker - but you say that you are unable to read the Key there.

    In such circumstances, the only things you can do are

    1) a reformat and reinstall using the manufacturer's recovery media

    2) purchase a new license for Windows (or a new computer)   

    There *may* be an alternative solution though, if you are patient and persistent.

    Attempt Telephone Activation, and speak to an operator - they will tell you that your current Key
    is blocked (they should then ask for confirmation of your Product Key). Explain
    to them your problem, that you need to change the Key to the one on your sticker,
    but that the sticker is unreadable (could they please supply a replacement
    Key?). Hopefully they will ask for documentary proof of the sticker, in the
    form of an email with a picture of the affected sticker - and you can proceed
    from there.

    Sometimes it takes two or three calls before you get an operator who actually knows and uses
    this procedure - but I know that it can and does happen.
