Microsoft Money asking for password RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just replaced a dying hard drive on my computer. I have reinstalled all of the programs I use except for Microsoft Money.

I used the disc that I bought in 2004, and now it is a different screen and it is asking for a password.

I have never set a password for this program.

    What is going on?

  • If the disk is for Money 2005, as it probably is if bought in 2004, see the second, sticky post in this forum and install the appropriate regional version of Money.

Money 2005 installations from disk need an online update from a server that no longer exists.

  • I went to the main forum (https://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home) and all I see are spam posts.

I need to get to my financial records. Why is Microsoft holding them hostage?

The program is Microsoft Money 2004 Small Business. I don't want any "update" because experience shows that Microsoft updates make the program less usable.

  • Not to worry about updates.  The last time Money was updated was 2008.  As DominicP told you, the disk you have won't work without an update from Microsoft and that update is no longer available.

    Go to:

which is the second "sticky" thread in this forum.  Find the link to download the installation file for your region.  If you are in the US and download the US Money Sunset version, you should also look at the first "sticky" thread in this forum:

and do the mnyob99.dll replacement that it describes.  Post back if you need help with any of this.

BTW, this forum is supported by fellow users.  No hostage takers here.

  • The Microsoft Money forum is https://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=money .

Microsoft Money 2004 versions should work without updates. But if you are seeing a different screen layout I think you may have been running a later, updated Money version.

If you can still access your old hard disk, check the version of msmoney.exe at C:Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money <version>\MNYCoreFiles\msmoney.exe. For Money 2004 it should be 12.x.x.x.

Microsoft Money 2004 Small Business is a US version, so Money Plus Sunset Home and Business will be the version you need if you have  been using the business options.
