has Live Mesh been abandoned RRS feed

  • Question

  • i've seen some articles (at zdnet.com, liveside.net, etc.) on changes Microsoft is making to its 'cloud' platform, and what I've read about Live Mesh seems a bit vague.  I can't say I read this forum often, but when I do, the most striking difference from earlier this year is the absence of Microsoft employees.  They seem to have disappeared shortly before Microsoft's May wave of layoffs.  Love the product & would hate to see it abandoned, but i'm getting that sinking feeling...

can't help but wonder... any MS employees care to comment?

    thanks

  • I am not a Microsoft employee but as far as I know development of Live Mesh is continuing. It is fairly normal in every Microsoft beta I've been involved with to see members of the product teams post frequently in the forums early in the beta cycle, then see their posts taper off to zero. They may not post often but the forums are always read.

  • Don't worry. Mesh is being integrated into the next wave of Windows Live.

  • Mesh is the greatest thing since sliced bread.   I can't imagine such a wonderful product would disappear.

  • True...

But that fact that we've seen no updates since june is not a good thing.

How about removing all limits about file size and number...

  • If it is still alive is there any plan to support devices other than personal computors? When will my blackberry have a mesh client? What about my DirecTV DTR? Sony Playstation? What is the point of a platfom that connects devices if ther are no supported device? Or has live mesh moved away from this?

The Live Mesh clients today support Windows, the Mac, and Windows Mobile. I have no knowledge of plans for other mobile devices with different operating systems, but that's probably on the to do list. As for the other devices you listed, I doubt it since these are closed platforms controlled by the manufacturers. They can take advantage of the platform, if desired, I suppose.

  • i keep wondering if I should go ahead & move to something else... i was pretty much settled on chalking Mesh up as 'abandonware' & moving to MS Live Sync, since the cloud part really isn't that big a deal to me due to the lack of encryption.  They do seem to keep Live Sync up.  But then I saw they released an update for the Mac users & now i'm wavering again.  Interesting stuff on liveside.net.  They seem to follow the whole mess this 'Live' platform is pretty closely & had a 'dead pool' on Live products.

i may give it another month or two and if I don't see any new developments, i'll probably switch to Live Sync.  MS has so many groups & products with such a hodgepodge & overlap -- Live Sync, Live Mesh, SkyDrive, etc.  Seems there's just no direction from anyone within MS...

  • If you follow LiveSide, you'll know that the various teams are hard at work on the next "Wave" of the Live products. Speculation is that we'll see a merging of Live Sync, Live Mesh and SkyDrive with the beta and eventual release of the next version.
Live Sync is a released product. Live Mesh is a beta product.
I think LiveSide also speculated that we'll see the beta late this year or early next with a release by mid-year 2010 -- all speculation, of course.
