Error Message when logging into WHS console: The windows home server experienced a problem with a feature... RRS feed

  • Question

  • "windows home server experienced a problem with a feature during the previous attempt to open it. If the problem persists, please contact Product Support"

I am given the option of Retry or Skip.   Retry brings the same error.  Skip brings up the console but I am missing the "Computers & Backup" section.

    Any ideas?

  • Here's how I solved the problem.

    1. Open the home server console via Remote Desktop

    2. Click skip when you get the error

    3. Close the console window

    4. Open the log directory c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\logs and look for the most current log named HomeServerConsole.*****.log

    5. Open the log file and look for any unfinished DLL errors. In my case the log file showed:

[1]090520.102356.6875: UI: Error: Unfinished DLL: HomeServerConsoleTab.Storage.dll.  User chose to block.
[1]090520.102401.2343: UI: Error: Unfinished DLL: HomeServerConsoleTab.HPSU.dll.  User chose to block.

    6. Go to the WHS application directory: c:\Program Files\Windows Home Server and rename all DLLs referenced in the log file as being unfinished.

    7. Open the home server console again. You the error message will not be displayed, but your tabs will still be missing.

    8. Close the console

    9. Go back to the application directory and rename the DLLs from step 6 above back to their original names.

    10. Re-open the console. You should have the tabs back again.

  • 1.  Only add-in currently installed is advance admin console.  I had others, Webguide,  autoexit, program launcher.  I had uninstalled all of them when the problem first appeared and then only reinstalled the advance admin console

    2. checked the logs and neither of those two event ID's are present.

    3.  Backup service is still running correctly

If you remove the advanced admin console add-in, does this still occur?
Is there an event ID for this issue and if there is, when you right click on it, what does the additional information indicate.

If removing the advanced admin console does not resolve this, please file a bug on Connect and include client and server CABs.

    Thanks!

    1. Do you have any add-ins installed?
    2. If you have the toolkit installed, have you checked the event logs to see if there are any problems with your disks? Event ID 55 or Event ID 7 specifically.
    3. Is the backup service still running? (you would most likely know if it wasn't as Network Health would indicate a warning)

    Thanks

  • bkinkele, thanx for the information. I just followed the instructions and found the following DLL errors:

[1]090527.203318.4062: UI: Error: Unfinished DLL: HomeServerConsoleTab.TabManager.People.dll.  User chose to retry.
[1]090527.203326.6250: UI: Error: Unfinished DLL: HomeServerConsoleTab.TabManager.Sharing.dll.  User chose to retry.
[1]090527.203334.5781: UI: Error: Unfinished DLL: HomeServerConsoleTab.TabManager.Storage.dll.  User chose to retry.

Now the Console opens without the error.

(I still have two instances of the Computers & Backups and avast! antivirus icons in the tab area, though)

    Regards,
